Hidden under the rear bumper are two badges containing serial numbers. None of the numbers relate to the VIN or engine numbers.

Can anyone confirm what these badges relate to? My suspicions are that the painted one would have identified what form the initial bodyshell should be built as, and its colour. The other badge, attached after painting, would identify LHD/RHD, trim, engine, gearbox, optional extras etc.

Removed one of mine whilst rooting under the bumper, doing some preventative maintenance.
Then lost the plate , so i am glad it has nothing to do with the cars vin or identity.

i had the painted spot welded numbers, but not the other
the painted one must be a ' body production ' number before its designated specification is given along with the vin, mine was rusting, so was removed, i have it somewhere, lol
if you study the VIN in the engine bay, you will see it was made by computer ' and stamped with a moving needle , this must be done when the body is pulled to make a car , and which engine/trim os to be added , in my white car, the VIN section was hand painted in matt black paint,
i also have an original VIN ' sticker ' in the passenger door aperture under the door striker , this gives greater detail to the trim level , paint and interior

Thanks Vince, that's a good point about the actual VIN. Maybe these two badges are used to generate the VIN?
Is a VIN used for all markets, or just the UK I wonder.
All these things obviously relate back to the production line and would have been recorded somewhere, maybe Paul S or Bleasie has come across this during their detailed factory investigations and can add something?
