Head lining shell

Just wondering has anyone tried to fibreglass there old flakey head liner shell?
Was planning on doing this so that the new headlining material would have a good surface to bind too.
Just worried that the extra thickness might be a issue, even though only slight.

I managed to crack my headlining (on the 6 cylinder Daimler) while getting it out and repaired it with glass fibre mat and resin.

I would strongly council against putting the patch on the headlining side - it's all but impossible to get a smooth finish and the foam backed material seems to amplify any imperfections. Putting patches on the roof side didn't cause any problems, however.

Was actually going to fibre glass the whole board on the lining material side, and then sand smooth, rather than just a patch.
I'm actually going to source a replacement old shell/biscuit as the one in mine is completely shot and someone has had a go at it before.
I know you can get a new shell but i think its a lot of money, and i am a bit allergic to spending it.
