water coming in through dashboard?

Postby bubbles » Fri Jan 09, 2009 11:30 pm

I have had my jag for well over a year now (1991 3.6 auto) my first! I have worked on her every time i got a chance too and i am near the end of fixing all of her, apart from one small water leak that occurs when it rains, i have checked all water drainages from under wiper motor and i have sealed around windscreen, but some how i keep getting this water coming in.
I would really apprecate any suggestions from any of you guy's out there!

I would put her in to a garage to be checked over, but at £50 an hour in them trying to find the leak is a bit much, but nowing you jec members out there who now there cars inside out would be willing to share their nowledge! Well i am hoping so?

Yours truly Alan.

water coming in through dashboard?

Alan,

When you say that you've sealed the windscreen, do you mean that you've taken off the windscreen chromes and sealed the rubber to the windscreen frame? You can't properly seal the windscreen with the chromes on.

The reason I ask is because XJSs are notorious leakers at the front. And the usual reasons are either water coming in from the plenum chamber (where the wiper motor is) or more usually leaks through the windscreen seal. This is often because of blocked drains from the top corners of the roof behind the vertical windscreen chromes. The build-up of water then gets behind the screen rubber and starts corroding the flange of the windscreen frame.

Try opening the door then pour some water down the gap at the top corner of the roof and see if drains cleanly onto the drain channel visible on the inner wing above and in front of the door hinge. If it doesn't, try poking some nylon-coated wire or similar down the drain channel from the roof and see if you can clean some gunge out.

Good luck

water coming in through dashboard?

Hello and welcome, can you see the water dripping from under the dash, or is it just generally wet in the footwells? If the latter, it could be the door seals leaking around the hinge area, or corrosion on the sill ends, hidden under the wheel arch covers. Water easily penetrates there and ends up in the footwell.

My door seals leak in the rain, luckily it drains away through the rust holes under the carpet!

It's the former in my case, on a facelift model. It's just started leaking today on the passenger side from under the dash. Any idea what it might be?

I love my XJS to pieces, but Christ, there's always something...

I think you might find that the bonding fixing the glass to the aperture is breaking down, so the only cause of action is to have the glass removed and any remedial work carried out on the scuttle before re-bonding the
glass back in.

water coming in through dashboard?

I had the same problem with my celebration - when I bought it I had noticed there was an occasional dribble onto the carpet. Had to take the windscreen out to fit a new a/c evaporator (which also was leaking) and let's just say the guy did not have to work too hard to get the windscreen out!

This was really useful not only to get at the evaportor but you could see the frame was showing signs of corroosion where the water collects at rhe bottom under the rubbers. I have de-rusted and waxoyled these. Thought about trying to seal the whole thing to keep water out completely but firghtened i will end up trapping moisture so have left as - I guess this is one area of poor design even in the last of the model - wonder if it is possible to put in a couple of drain holes for the windscreen scuttle?
