Boot badge question

I am about to fit missing boot badges to my facelift XJS. Is there a "right" position or is it fairly approximate? Looks like I'll only get one go and these are pigging expensive for what they are!

My suggestion would be to find a fellow member with a similar car and take some measurements. At the factory they probably had a template to get them straight and, as you say, you only get one go!

UPDATE - found the page in the workshop manual

There is a right position.

I made cardboard masks that sit on top of the chrome finisher and butt to the left and right-hand lid edges; then you carefully position the badges to rest on the top edge of the cardboard, and press home.

It's in the Workshop manual Volume 4 Body Repair section 77 page 18.
In essence, the line across the bottom of the V12 is 22mm above the finisher and 34mm from the RH edge.
The X of the XJS is also 22mm up, but the S is 21.5mm up (that's 'cos rounded edges need to exceed the line to look "right") and the left edge of the XJS is 145mm from the right edge of the V12. If you're not a V12, the XJS is placed 34mm from the RH edge.

The Jaguar is 34mm from the LH edge, and 22mm up.

Obviously, you have to ignore the descender on the J in both Jaguar and XJS.

Where is the best place to source replacement boot badges for a 1996 celebration convertiable? I assume these should be silver not gold. Or would anyone advise getting existing badges replated? Thanks.

Interestingly the VIN codes suggest they should be gold. Mine look silver but I think that is only because the colour has worn off after all those years of washing and polishing. AFAIK the wheel centres are also gold (on black).

Having said that the colour of the paintwork will be an influencing factor.

Plastic gold badges were an option and often fitted to US cars. Most UK Celebrations came with plastic chrome (silver) badges. And yes, the gold ones just fade to silver over time anyway!
