Boot badging question

The XJ-S and HE badges on my boot (1983 coupe) are looking a little tired. Also there is rust bubbling under the HE badge so I am wondering what to do. First question, is it easy to pry off these badges without damaging either the badge or the paintwork? I assume they have locating pins on the back of them or maybe not, maybe they just stick on. I'm guessing they have locating pins with corresponding holes drilled in the boot as there is rust starting there. Anyway I'm torn between buying new badges and trying to re-chrome the tired ones with chrome sheeting that you can get from model shops.
Also, HE or V12 badging. Is there a rule? I'm sure my badges are original and mine says HE on the right of the boot as you look at it but I have seen photos with a V12 badge in place of the HE. What's the story?
Thanks in advance for info/guidance.

Hi there - the earlier HE's were badged as that to mark the economy improvement that the May cylinder heads, increased compression ratios, lean burn and 2.88:1 differential brought. I guess this was marketing's way of trying to change the thirsty image of the car.
Later cars were then badged V12. I can't recall exactly when that change happened but my own 1989 car is badged as V12 for example. I think the change was a year or so before that?
You are right in that the badge has pins that go through holes in the metalwork and are held on with push nuts. They also have two sided sticky foam.
They can be removed with care but you've identified the pitfalls correctly. A bit of heat from 'Er Indoors' hair dryer and careful levering with a plastic tool will get them off. Obviously the push nuts have to be removed from inside first.
I don't think that they can be bought from Jaguar any more but you might find someone with new/old stock or good used ones.
I also think that the V12 badge fits the same pattern of holes so you have the choice of which you use.
Hope that helps
David

Good info from David. If it influences your decision at all, I think the XJ-S badge is still available from Jaguar but not the V12 or HE. The V12 was also available just as. Stick-on as well as the pinned version, and the stick-on ones do turnup on eBay sometimes. I also think that some of the US suppliers have some of the badges, although not sure if repro or NOS.
Good luck
Paul

a quick pic of what you have will help us identify what you have , as there were plastic and metal versions of all badges
the badges do not lend them selves to refurbishment very well, and the chrome backing tape can look a little odd on them ,
removal is by way of gently prying them off , as David says some were also double sided foam trim tape ,
sourcing alternative used or new badges could look much better ,

Thanks chaps. Very helpful. I've bought a used HE badge from eBay. Will take some pics later today.
@ david, I think I had a look inside the boot lid and from memory there doesn't seem to be a way of getting to those pins from the inside. Am a bit confused.

the badges will be pushed into a plastic retainer in the bootlid , simply gently pry off
