Hi,

As a new JEC member I wanted to know if f/r wings are bolted on, or welded own a 3.6 XJ-S 1990, also looking to replace bonnet/boot panels due to rust.

My intention is too re-spray the whole car with panels with minor blemishes.

Any advice or comments would be appreciated.

a great car to own and run , but they can be problematic at times, but your in the right place to get advice


as to your question

the front wings are bolted on , well, almost, lol , a section of the front wheel arch where it meets the lower panel by the bumper has a small weld and is lead filled for cosmetic reasons, but that is the only weld on each side


the rear wings are fully welded to the whole shell, full size repair panels for the rear are still available, but are a lot of work to replace

you will be pleasantly surprised on how much is still available for our cars, but prices can vary wildly , so shop around once you find out which part number you need

Hello from me as well, Its certainly also worth inspecting the other vulnerable areas such as inner wings below the damper mounts, front subframe, radius arm/jacking point mounts and butresses etc.

A lot of cars at that age are at the point where you have to think hard about whether it's financially worth the effort when very good ones can be bought for relatively little money. Of course if it's a project or hobby then cost isn't so important. My neighbour can't understand why I keep spending on mine and yet he shells out far more each year bashing a golf ball around a field with a very expensive set of sticks, each to their own

Where do you live in Hampshire?

as pop said, there are lots of places to check for hidden corrosion

the MOT ones are as he said, front damper mounts to the inner wings, inner wing tops , rear radius arm mounts by the rear jacking pints , and around the rear windscreen and front windscreens are also an issue

only if your interested, i have a boot lid skin, with rear vertical section , and drivers door skin and a full drivers side rear quarter ( roof down to the sill and to the back lights from drivers door ) i no longer plan to use , plus some radius arm mounts repair sections

Going back to pop reply my intention is to deal with the mechanical issues with handling (worn bushes) which will involve front & rear suspension/brakes to pass next MOT.

Recently had car inspected by a jag independent garage who were impressed how solid the car was underneath no corrosion issues in the usual places.

Hi Winston and welcome to the club. I live on the western border of Hampshire between Andover and Salisbury and have had some experience restoring both my XJS's.
If you'd like to meet up and pick my brains you'd be very welcome.
Another possibility is that we have a monthly meeting at Kemble Airfield (near Cirencester) where a few long-term XJS owners like Brake Buster and myself meet up. The next one is on 30th January.

you are more than welcome to attend the Kemble breakfast meeting if you would like to come along , and you don't necessarily have to be in your XJS

i probably won't bring my own XJS as she is in my garage having some engine works done, i and i would have to tax her for the month to use for just one day on the 30th , so will be in my other jag, an X-type ,
