BB - thanks for the offer but I fear it's the wrong colour. Seafrost would be MDS I think.

Oldtimer - thanks for the support but I think it might catch the show judge's eye for all the wrong reasons!

I went in Halfords last night to get a can of paint mixed up. It would appear that their paint codes are mixed up on their computer. I gave them the paint code which they found on their system straight away but it was described as silver. We were a little sceptical so mixed up a very small amount to see and indeed it was silver and not Ice Blue so didn't bother to go any further.
I think I'll try somewhere else!

David,

I don't know whether your Halfords had a problem but don't be surprised if some paint factors describe it as a "silver" colour. Jaguar MD.. colours sit within the "Silver" range, whereas most Jaguar "blues" sit within the J.... range. Your colour is a very light blue whose code sits within the "silver" range of codes.

Your MDP is also sometimes referred to as 821. Try also quoting the Jaguar colour number and see what they come up with.

Good luck

David,
There is a Company near me called Groome and Hornsby, as part of their set up they appear to supply all the local body shops with paint and thinners and associated gear. I recently needed Turquoise in cellulose for the old XJ. I purchased one can plus two aerosols.

The lady that served me was an absolute Jem. She produced, what would you call it, A swatch of plastic strips, all Turquoise but a range of shades. Bear in mind the paint is 40 years old so some fading had obviously taken place. The final chosen shade has worked out a treat.

David, If I were you I would enquire at one of your local body shops to see who there paint and bits supplier is.

There has to be a similar set up in your neck of the woods as I mentioned above.

Good hunting

I had a can of the body colour made up and tried a bit but it was obviously wrong and didn't match the under bonnet "finish" at all.
So plan B - I took the radiator cross braces off and took one into Rainbow Paints for matching. The ladies there got out loads of "swatches" and we set about finding a colour match. Well I think we got pretty close! I got a can made up. The mistake I made was to order it in matt. That turned out to be too flat. So I got another can in satin and that's much better.
So judge for yourself below!
Next step will be to blitz the area and inside the cross brace with Waxoil.
The match isn't exact but at least it will mostly be hidden behind the cooling pack when it's back together!

Hi David,
That's matched in, pretty dam good. A posh new radiator to go with it, all coming along a treat.

I just love the facility to enlarge the photo you posted - better "blow in" that spot adjacent to the alternator and replace that stretched grommet near by.

David,

That looks great! When they did the match, were you able to get a code for the colour that they then identified or a composition formula of what they actually made up?

The front end is going to look superb with the new rad etc. Remember to change all the rusty nuts on the top rad x-member for some nice stainless ones!

Br careful with that bottom hose which is NLA in the UK for AJ16 engines. There is a place in the US doing repro ones if you need one. If you do change it, I'd be interested in your old one for a little project that I'm doing!

Also, it's a great time to fit one of Andy Stodart's brackets if you haven't already go one fitted!

Yes - there are a few spots to tidy up on the inner wing.
The grommet isn't stretched - it's supposed to be oval!

Paul - they made it up to the recipe for the swatch. It's on the can so I can match it again so long as I don't lose the can!
I've ordered up a load of stainless bolts to change anything I can.
If you look carefully at the photo you'll see one of Andy's brackets already fitted! Works very well!!
Bottom hose is going to have to soldier on as you say. Jaguar do list one but at a scary price! Can't see anything wrong with it so will keep it on but have changed the others.

Hi
New member who has just joined. Is there any chance you can let me have the paint code, as I have got an Ice blue coupe that needs some rust treatment under the bonnet also.

Here's the label on the can. This is the matt one but I guess the code is the same?
