correct, but the right tool is still the best route, serious injury can occur, as shown in the photo when a spring let go

Crumbs, I didn't expect the wider consequences generated in this thread and I certainly don't want to add to specific members comments but I do want to clarify that my injuries were not as a result of the springs.

I was carrying the radiator when I tripped over and fell forward trapping my finger under the radiator with my weight on top. My own fault, I'm an experienced mechanic but sometimes $h1t happens. :(

Considering the controversy that my original post to this thread has caused, and effectively being restricted in what other members advice to me can be given, I have decided to sell the XJ-S. Other than the rusty front subframe, this will be a lovely car for the next owner. I don't feel confident enough to attempt the removal and refit of the front subframe without the input from my fellow club members, that have already done this procedure, so another XJ-S goes onto an unknown fate!

It's an unfortunate reflection that the cost of labour together with the unavailability of certain parts has necessitated that cars with apparently relatively corrosion or damage can end up being scrapped or, more likely, being broken for spares. I know of one late convertible, that, 6 years ago was written off by an insurance company with a damaged front wing, broken headlight, bumper beam and bumper chromes. None of those parts were available new at the time.

Phil, remember that the club has a paid technical adviser for XJSs in David Marks who will be quite prepared to give you free professional some advice re the front subframe if you choose to go down that route.

Good luck with whatever route you choose.

I can appreciate that you might feel you've stirred up a hornet's nest, but if you look back over this thread, at least 3 people with relevant experience gave advice. If you decide to attempt it, we're still happy to help. You may also like to look at the Jaguar Enthusiast magazine archive (in the Members Only section of the web site), where searching for "subframe" for XJS throws up a 2-part article where David Marks talks you through the process complete with pictures.

The part that's caused some consternation is removing the springs. Two of us who've done this both gave personal experience of the danger of "home brew" tools, and the forum moderator added more advice of the danger.

If you want to reconsider disposing of the car, you could consider the following approaches to removing the springs:
  • Contact the club's tool hire department to see if it's economically viable to get the Jaguar tool sent over to Canada on hire - I guess shipping charges and delays might make it too expensive.
  • I guess your fledgeling region hasn't sufficient members to justify buying the tools outright as a region resource, though maybe the club might be able to help out with that.
  • I've heard of people borrowing tools from a friendly Jaguar dealer, but that depends on how friendly and near your dealer is.
  • I'd personally consider getting someone from a local garage to bring appropriate tools to your car and remove the springs there. Having scared myself once, I think it makes sound sense to spend a few pounds to avoid or at least delegate the danger of broken bones or worse.
  • Find a replacement subframe from a similar XJ-S with decent springs; then there's no need to remove them!

The club cost of the spring compressor is now £460, I don't know if that includes VAT but postage will be high due to the weight. few individuals can justify outright purchase, yes I know it can be hired, but has been discussed many times before it is needed twice (unless you're in for an exceptionally busy week end), and postage will likely be a problem. (Especially to Canada as in this case!)

Of course there are alternative methods, none 'official' but all easily found on t'internet. I fully understand the club doesn't want to condone any action which may lead to injury or legal action but if discussion here is censored then it will surely be the end for many.

I quote from the clubs 'about us' statement
Our aim is to assist such enthusiasts, in a friendly and informal manner, to keep their cars on the road with the minimum of cost.
To me, that means gaining a broad spectrum of information from knowledgeable sources and then making up my own mind as a responsible adult what I do with that information.

Hello all,

"The club cost of the spring compressor is now £460,"

I just viewed the spring compressor in the tools section and that seems terribly over priced going by the photograph? I must admit I haven't seen it in the flesh.

Any comments? I am well aware of the hazards of dismantling suspension under compression by the way?

Is it possible for the club to release a set of drawings to allow Phil to get a proper spring compressor made? I don't see why this can't be done and getting one made in Canada must surely be cheaper than buying one in the UK and shipping it out there.

As long as suitable materials are used then why not?
