Due to a bit of unexpected free time today, I managed to get the top hinge off. I can see what has happened, the pin has seized on the bushes and the pin holes in the plates have worn. Whether I can repair it or not is another thing.

I would suggest readers check theirs, if the pin moves with the doors, its OK, although it would still benefit from lubrication perhaps. If the pins are stationary when the door is open and closed, the bushes are seized and you may want to carry out some maintenance before it wears out. I must admit that I can't ever remember taking too much notice of the hinges before, I wish I had!

I wanted to remove the door mirror but one of the captive nuts is turning with the bolt which might explain why I could never tighten it up. I guess I will have to drill it out and locate a new chrome machine screw.

So, 12 years later! I finally fixed this problem. To recap, the Rivnuts were spinning so it was impossible to tighten, or remove the screws that hold the mirror to the door. My bodge at the time was to pin them by using a tiny self tapping screw.

A proper Rivnut tool is very expensive to buy, especially just to use it twice so the problem was parked. Last week I visited a good friend who happened to be installing Rivnuts in an aluminium boat panel and he kindly lent me the tool.
I had expected to drill out the existing fittings so bought new 6mm Rivnuts and stainless steel countersunk machine screws from 'abouttownbolts' (who are excellent in suppling these ssort of fittings).

With the mirror off, I was about to start drilling when it occoured to me that maybe they could just be tightened, 10 mins later with the correct Rivnut tool they both had pulled up quite a lot and vere now very firm. So a quick and easy fix in the end without having to remove any internal door panels. Result!
