91 Facelift Windscreen Water Leak

Postby xjscharlie » Mon Jun 24, 2019 8:32 pm

Hello Folks,
I have a water leak via the windscreen on 91 XJS V12 resulting in a pool of water in the drivers footwell. I know this is a known problem as i've had it myself on 4 cars~2 XJ12's and 2 XJS and i've never succeeded in curing any of them. I've tried various sealants around the windscreen seal and liquid sealers such as "Seek and Seal"~no success.
Just wondered if anyone had encountered this and succeeded in curing it. Any advice appreciated. Charlie.

I did have a similar problem a few years back following a windscreen replacement.

It turned out that the national chain who did the job left a strip several inches long at the base of the screen without the bonding material adhering to the glass. A specialist body shop got their glass man to fix it, but unfortunately rust started and last week I had to have a scuttle repair carried out - probably as a consequence of the previous screen change.

With the bonded screen on a face lift, squeezing sealant in after it has been fitted may not get to the source of the problem, but then finding a windscreen fitter that has actually done an XJS before and knows how to do it properly is no simple matter, either.

One trouble with the XJS is that if there is a problem sealing the windscreen, a pool of water can collect at the outside bottom corners of the mounting groove, leading to rust. It's imperative you get that fixed properly (i.e. with metal, not filler), as the water gets between the sides of the double-walled bulkhead and rots out from the inside; then you need a new bodyshell....

If you have doubts, remove the trim (taking photos so you know how to put it back again) and take a decko.
