Postby vipervisual » Tue Feb 06, 2018 9:07 pm

Hi,
XJ-S 85 with the problem mentioned in the title. Slight drop when driver side door opened. How can I fix this? Or do I need a new hinge?

Please advise. Many thanks in advance.

Probably a worn hinge. A known issue due to the age of the car and the size and weight of the door.

Hi,
Usually the drivers side is the most worn, and getting 2nd hand ones can be a mistake. I have read that if you buy 2nd hand ones buy the passenger side ones as it reduces the chance of getting worn ones. The hinges are now obsolete but I think in the US you can get inserts and pins. If most of the wear is on the pins you could quite easily get some manufactured. The XJS club said there is a chance of getting some obsolete parts manufactured and were asking for examples, so I did put forward the hinges. Grublocker once sold refurbished hinges, but unfortunately that does not exist now. It just shows that a little lubrication in certain areas of the car car prevent this problem.

Alan

To clarify, this only works if you are buying them from a left hand drive car, left and right are not interchangeable.

In my experience the pin seizes in the bush so they don't wear but as the pin is now turning in the holder, the hole becomes elongated. The doors are so long and heavy a ting amount of wear will drop the door quite a way. I have tried in the past to repair them without success although perhaps a keen enthusiast with a lathe could turn a new bronze bush and weld in the pin to the housing?

I can confirm from personal experience that removal of the hinges is not an easy or quick task.
