Had new windscreen fitted the other day - I'll will share my feelings about the design another day; the previous one was leaking and rust was beginning in one or 2 areas.

The reason for this post is the rear view mirror - mine is about 25cms and when a passenger pulls down their sunvisor it knocks the mirror! Is this a bad design or has someone fitted a larger mirror at some time?

How large is yours - so I can compare with mine as I cannot tell if it is original??!! As the fittet did not refit the mirror I am taking this opportunity to replace the mirror if it is the wrong kind.

Graeme,

Not in a position to tell you how big mine is at the moment! However, I can tell you that there are two types of mirrors fitted to late XJSs:

- All coupes from VIN 190528 (beginning of '94 model year) to the end of production had part no. BEC 24923

- Convertibles had the same part number up to VIN 192501 and it then changed to BEC 24924 (don't know what is the difference)

I've got the latter convertible mirror and you can definitely pull down both visors without fouling the mirror. I'd be very surprised if the earlier mirror was fouled by the visors coming down (the visors are the same on late convertibles and coupes). I'm sure one of the late coupe boys and girls can confirm this. - DH Dove - get the tape measure out!

To serve is to obey......
Mine's ten inches at the bottom (@25cms) and nine inches at the top and does not foul the visors........
Please save the wisecracks.................
NB mount is v. close to the top of the screen, suggest you check mount position re central (has it previously fallen off and been refitted off-centre /height and orientation of base.

You are quite correct - it must have been fitted off centre before; checked it out and if it is in the centre the sunvisors do not obstruct it.
Thanks all for your help.

Now I know I have the correct size I am looking at purchasing an auto dimming mirror which has the same dimensions - it does not look too difficult to fit.

Graeme
Glad you got a result :D
BEWARE auto-dimming mirrors, the ones I know of are connected to the vehicles electrical system but are filled with noxious chemicals, and if they leak will ruin your interior.................

Oh - do you know of people who have had this happen to them? Perhaps this is not such a good idea - I just thought whilst the mirror is off...
