Windscreen seal

Postby chrisxj-s3.6 » Fri Jul 07, 2006 10:42 am

Hi fellow XJ-S owners :D

My 3.6 coupe is suffering from leaks via both bottom windscreen corners.
Please can anyone recommend someone who can take out my
windscreen and replace the windscreen rubber and filler piece. :?:
I have both new parts supplied from Jaguar.

I am located near Tonbrige in Kent.

Any ideas or information much appreciated.

Thank you ..... Chris

Can't suggest anyone, but I've got some tips which might be useful. Make sure the fitter has experience of this type of screen. Fitter might say he won't be responsible if it breaks (I don't know how you'd play that, I'd of thought that's what his insurance is for) Don't give the fitter the the job if he will leave without fitting the brightwork (while the bonding is still wet). the brightwork can't be put on afterwards, as it just won't fit without bending and creasing it. The screen must have bonder applied to fil the gaps or it'll leak. Again if he's done that sort before he'll know all these points. Leak test with a pressure washer asap after glued.

When I needed the rear screen of my XJ-40 to be resealed I just called Autoglass. It cost £70 (insurance excess) and the fitter knew how to replace all the brightwork before rebonding the seal.

Apparently there's a knack to getting all the bright-work in place before fitting the screen, so it's not a DIY job unless you are feeling very brave.

I’ve been to both the Jaguar main dealer and autowindscreens and I’d always go back to Jaguar.
Here’s my tale……………

My front screen was leaking so I decided to have a new seal fitted.
I got a quote from autowindscreesn for fitting the seal if I supplied the part, but they warned me there was a risk of the screen breaking on removal which if needed they could order a new one and replace for me.

So I decided to contact my local Jaguar dealer for a comparison quote.
They were going to charge more for fitting but if the screen broke would charge £50 less for the part!

So I decided to go with Jaguar. The final bill was £182.
They did a fantastic job and even steam cleaned my wheels for free!
The trouble was 2 months down the line I got a stone chip.
So I decide to go to autowondscreens for a repair.
This was only going to cost a small nominal fee but once again they said there was a risk of the screen cracking due to the proximity of the chip.

You guessed it.
My screen cracked!
They said not to worry you can claim on your insurance.
They replaced my screen and all I paid was the excess of £50.
But what a s**t job they’ve done!
The chrome trim does not fit properly and there are gaps where they shouldn’t be.
I’ve been back twice but they say there is nothing wrong with the fit.

Take my advice if you want a good job doing take it to the specialists.

Just a little follow-up:

My XJ-40's windscreen cracked the other day so I called Autoglass to get a replacement. They just turned up with a Daimler 4.2 Limousine screen instead. Muppets! Who ever heard of a 1992 Daimler Limmo?!

They're coming back on Friday when they can be bothered to bring the correct screen.

As an aside I was talking to the fitter and he was saying that the most exotic Jag he's worked on was the Land Speed Record breaking XK which had a two-part windscreen custom-made for it. Apparently he had to turn up and cut the new screen on site using the old one as a template.

Nearly asked him to cut me an XJ40 one if he's that good...

I also asked him if XJ-S seals give him any hassle, he said that he hasn't done one for ages but remembers that the chrome can be a real pig to get fitted properly. Hopefully I won't be finding out any time soon.
