Door mirror

I backed into my nearside doormirror whilst polishing the bonnet! The washer holding the large spring inside came off. How do I refit it please. 1993 facelift coupe.

Thanks , much food for thought. I had thought of compressing the washer and spring in a vice using a socket but it seems getting the wire out of the mirror assembley is difficult.

i have literally just did this repair to my mirror base,

as long as the end hasnt rusted off you will be able to refit it

i used the large socket ( 17mm ? ) and one of those nylon pump grip things used as a g-cramp ,

i thought a vice would be too harsh to use and didnt wantt o damage the mirror , as the metal used can crack very easily

however, the wiring on yours will get in the way , as mine were took apart ready for re-painting back to the body colour

Do you have access to aircraft type locking wire (.032" or smaller)? If not I could send you some. (Send me a private message)
Slide the spring down the electric cables, compress it fully either in a vice and with a pair of vice grips or using vice-grips(2), lockwire the spring coils on opposite sides in the fully compressed position. This takes the spring out of the equation.
Slide it back up onto mirror, position locking spring washer and gently drift onto mirror stem until firmly secured and a tight grip on stem using either a socket or suitable punch. Cut the locking wire and withdraw it from the spring coils.

If that does not work try one of the brake spring tools you can get on ebay which have a slot that allows you to work with the wire in place. I had to remove the connectors to enable me to thread the wire through the tool. I also turned the spring washer upside down as mine had become a little mangled - went on a treat.

I would be interested if anyone knows of a source for new spring washers?
