I-Pace anybody?

Postby PaulGover » Mon Oct 02, 2023 10:38 am

I'm thinking of replacing my diesel XJ (too many faults that will cost £££ to fix) with a second-hand I-Pace. So, which forums? I see the F-Pace forum is relatively quiet, which I presume means it's mostly reliable and people have yet to get around to changing the brakes or doing their own servicing or whatever. Are there any I-Pace driver here, or elsewhere on the forums? I'm after information about experiences in buying and or running one.

I would advise that you get some insurance quotes before proceeding. It seems all EV drivers of all makes are finding massive increases recently.

Good evening Paul

Please review the SUV section of the JE Magazine for the past year. I have been writing regularly about my experiences with my I-Pace. Ownership over the past year and a half with the best car I have every owned, which includes BMs, Mercs, fast fords and two Jaguar XEs, has been fantastic. Obviously I-Pace ownership does not suit everyone and there are pleanty of issues to think about, one is the possible inflated cost of insurance, which has been pointed out. (not found this myself as yet)

The facbook pages, I-Pace owners and I-Pace drivers, have over 3000 members all very willing to share their experiences. I have found these a great source of information.

My rationale 18 months ago was to look for a relatively high mileage example that has only had one owner. The thinking here was that either, any problems had been sorted, or the car did not have any major issues. That has worked for me as the car has been perfect during my ownership so far. The only issue that I have had is - maintenance induced failure - main dealer changed the 12v battery incorrectly and placed a fault on the car which had to be sorted by anpother dealer.

I would say that the reoccuring themes that arise regularly are;
1 - cars after MY 2020 that have the Privi-pro infortainment system also have the 11kW AC charger are best if you can afford one.
2 - However, due to the microchip shortage earlier cars can have better specifications - look in detail at what is included with any car
that you are interested in. Standard spec can change
3 - Jaguar Warrenty or extended warrenty is really important. These come with Jaguar Assist who are really good at getting any
problems sorted. e.g. a few owners have had windscreens delaminating and had to have some carpets changed as part of the repair
4 - ask for the one or two (depending upon the year) 12v batteries to be checked and changed if they are more than a few years old. (If these give problems then the results can be startling - throws up a multitude of warnings on the dash) ( A bit like my SAAB did may moons ago when the alternator failed)

The EV picture in the UK is developing rapidly - I have tried over the past year, in the JE magazine, to include my everyday experiences so have a read and please ask any further questions that you would like answers too.

Kind regards
Paul

Paul,

Thanks for that. I must admit, my pile of unread JE magazine is rather tall!

Indeed, I'm seeing numbers like that on Jaguar's own second-hand listings.

Apart from the fact that in over 50 years motoring I've never bought a new car, while I like the idea of a new EV, I couldn't justify the CO2 emissions to build it, as I do insufficient miles to recover it, whereas second hand someone else has already made that choice.

Quite agree, the most environmentally friendly car is one that has already been built :D

Difficult to understand how this I pace could not be turned off or stopped by the driver.

Strange story, it seems the car must have travelled at least 30 miles on 3 motorways in that state?

The papers say it was accelerating on it's own to between 90 & 100mph, but I'm not sure how you'd get round the sliproads between the 3 motorways at that speed?

According to the papers, it just ran out of electricity eventually. Maybe the driver is now grateful for the limited range of an EV!

Also, it had apparently happened before and drove at 120mph that time.

Yeh - a lot of smoking mirrors and inconsistances with this one. It has been all over social media over the past few days. Some reports say that the 12v system failed, others think that the accelerator became stuck (caught by the carpet?). It seems strange that the basic 'fail safe' protocol of any engineering system has not cut in - everyone else reports a rapid slowing if a failure occurs - just as the 'limp home mode - happens on other cars.

I think that there will be a logical explanation but the issue is will JLR publish the findings so that we may learn the truth. At the moment anything else is speculation - including the apparent lack of damage from the Police cars stopping a vehicle from such a high speed - the media dealing in facts would be helpful.

Kind regards
Paul

I agree that it all seems a bit strange at the moment

Not the first time this sort of thing has happened with a JLR product. A friend of mine was travelling from Glasgow to Edinburgh in his then relatively new Discovery with the V8 engine. Whilst travelling the M8, the car "ran away", continuing to accelerate until it was around 95MPH, which was its top speed. The friend, an experienced driver, realised what was happening and applied the brakes sparingly so as to not over cook them until there was a safe place to bring the car to a halt. This happened to be the Service Area at Harthill and it all came to a stop without injury, but the brakes were completely shot. Car went back to LR and was never seen again! No real explanation, it wasn't a stuck pedal, that was still springing back up during the incident.
It did put him off LR products forever and I fear this story in today's social media frenzied world will do massive harm to the JLR brand and image. Who wants to buy a super EV for a 6 figure sum when it can fail so dramatically - even if it turns out to be driver error?

Please - don't try this at home everyone.

Trying out the acceleration in the I-Pace on a public road - caught in the act, so dial 999 and claim that the car is acting on its own!!!

This will only land you in one place.

Enjoy your car with a thought for other road users, is my motto.

The chap gave a lengthy interview on 'Geoff buys cars' YouTube channel.
Although he was very convincing, much of the story didn't add up. If it turned out he was lying, he will be in for a load of trouble.
Perverting the course of justice is not taken lightly.
