Handbrake auto-adjusting thingy

Postby Mark_B » Tue Nov 29, 2005 3:56 am

Has anyone managed to get those automatic handbrake adjustment thingys in the inboard calipers to work properly? Every few months I have to go underneath and persuade the ratchety-click things to take up the slack by tapping them sharply to start them off. They move back and forth OK when HB operated, the cable has got the right amount of slack (otherwise that would stop the adjusters working altogether). They just not very good at it even though I replaced inside it the spring, ratchety-thing and other whatnot clip thing with brand new. Maybe you're not meant to grease the mechanism or something?

I have heard it said (more than once) that old grease in the handbrake callipers can be a cause of this problem. Certainly the stuff that came out of my XJ6's recently was pretty solidified.
