Bleeding ABS brakes

Postby boots1234 » Tue May 04, 2010 7:40 pm

1990 XJS 3.6 COUPE

Completed overhauling front calipers and now onto bleeding. I have changed the front flexible hoses, nothing else, therefore reservoir is almost empty.

Since Cat has ABS the Jag manual appears to state that front and back brake systems are independent from each other and therefore the front calipers can be bled without bleeding the rear brakes.

Have I understood this correctly?

The front brakes can be bled the normal way (shouting UP, DOWN at the missus!) with the ignition off, I've done this a few times. If the level has dropped enough to let air into the rears then you will have to bleed the whole lot out as per the manual. One word of caution, bleed the rears in 30 second bursts so as to not damage the pump.
