Brake Fluid?

Postby iain1980 » Tue Feb 02, 2010 9:38 pm

Should I be using DOT 5.1 or DOT 4?

The old fluid resevoir idiot sticker clearly said DOT4 but the replacement (Dont ask why! ) says DOT 5.1.

Local jaguar dealership says DOT4

Halfords(Why would I listen to them?!) are hedging their bets and saying DOT4 or DOT5.1.

I know they should mix but a definative answer would be reaaly helpful.

Brake Fluid?

if flushing and replacing the fluid, then use the latest version DOT5.1 , as this is the very latest in the development of the brake fluid

the latest at the time of your car was DOT4 ,and if only topping up, use the same , and to be honest, YOU wont notice any difference between the two with regard to performance ( new for new ) but may well notice an improvement in pedal feel with old for new, and the ABS pump ( if fitted ) wont have to work so hard to keep pressures up....

a good thing to remember is that brake fluid should be fully replaced every three years or so, as it picks up contaminants and deteriorates with age

if its definitive you want , then get it in writing from jaguar, and follow their advice...or ....... its your choice
