I have just discovered that the EBC vented discs on the front of my 4L have been fitted back to front, left on right and right on left, how easy is it to remove the discs and swap them around?

Not too bad a job. Here's how it usually goes with me

Jack up, place stands, Remove road wheel, remove caliper (can be stiff) drop spacing shims, spend several minutes searching for them. Wonder briefly, which ones came from where?

Undo hub, remove disc and hub, reflect on whether it would have been better to undo disc from hub while still on car, remove disc securing bolts through hole.

Clean hub, put new disc on. Replace.

Agonise over the wire locking of the caliper bolts. Finally decide, on third go, that neatness isn't that important.

Reset bearing clearance, debate use of dial gauge, try it and discover horrendous runout, remove everything to get at microscopic piece of scale that had somehow inserted itself between disc and hub despite all precautions and reposition everything, again.

This time endfloat and runout are well within limits, feel proud. Replace road wheel. Repeat for other side.

Just out of interest, how are the discs 'handed'? I've not heard of nor experienced this, but my ignorance is enormous (only exceeded by my clumsiness - see above) and I've never used EBC discs, either, so I'd be grateful for the info.

Hi
Thanks for the info :D

The EBC discs have cooling grooves which are handed and mine are wrong so I need to swap them.

I would put a picture on but I cannot remember how to, much be my age!

Hey, they sound wonderful!

Especially the slotted, drilled ones.

And they provide so many more opportunities for me to cock up the fitting

Michael,

Just to add another thought to further confuse you - in theory, you should also swap the pads over with the discs as they will have inevitably worn in to their correspondiong disc. However, if you do this, you should keep them on the same relative side of the disc ie inboard or outboard BUT turn them upside down! I can't remember if that's possible (are they symmetrical top to bottom?) on the front pads or not, but ideally that's what you should do.

As I said, just one more thing to confuse (and worry) you!

Paul

Al, great summary of how to change the discs! The only thing I would add is to repeatedly question the recommended Jaguar dismantling process at each step and agonise whether there's an easier way to do it! This is something I consistently do when changing the discs which probably explains why it takes me all day!

You are so right!

There's almost always another way...

Like when the manual says 'assistance may be required' it really means 'you better have a football team handy'
