Rear nearside (left side) ABS sensor for outside brakes

Postby peterg78 » Wed Mar 11, 2020 11:42 am

I have a 1996 Celebration and the local Independent Jaguar garage has been doing some work on the handbrake but came across a problem with the left rear hub resulting in a replacement being needed. Unfortunately in the process the rear ABS sensor broke (not unusual I understand). This item is no longer manufactured and finding a replacement is proving difficult, even second hand. Has anyone else experienced this problem and if so is there a work around? Alternatively does anyone know of any Jaguar spares suppliers who might have a sensor?
Many thanks. Peter

Peter,

The right rear is still available new. The only difference might be cable length. I'm not sure whether left or right is longer?

A quick search on ebay seems to turn up quite a few used ABS sensors for earlier years of XJS. I'm not sure if there's any difference in earlier years of ABS sensor? Try ringing one of the club's advisors, David Marks, Ken Jenkins or Keith Parrington and get their advice on whether earlier ones are ok.

As regards sourcing a used one elsewhere than ebay, try the usual XJS breakers - Grublogger, Just XJS, Clarkes of Sussex, Eurojags etc etc. I'm sure you'll be able to get what you need.

Good luck

Paul,
Many thanks for responding. I had tried the names suggested and many more besides but had not contacted the JEC office who pointed me in the direction of Ken Jenkins who in turn sugested I try Simply Performance. SP it seems had already been contacted by the garage dealing with my car and I believe were instrumental in the eventual solution. The solution was to fit the rear right hand sensor. The lead is long enough for the sensor at the wheel hub to be "reversed" enabling the tab through which the fixing bolt fits to line up correctly. This is a cost effective solution if a left hand sensor cannot be found in the UK. I did find the sensors available in the USA; secondhand at $175-250 or new at $515. On top of these prices are courier costs and duties! I did find slightly cheaper new sensors at USA Jaguar dealers but they would only supply to USA addresses.

So, many thanks Paul and to all others I contacted who did their utmost to help and I hope my experience may be of help to others who experience the same problem in the future.

Peter,

Good to hear that you got it sorted.

In case others do need to buy a right hand rear sensor and can't find a used item, they are still available new from Jaguar at £268.
