ABS light on

Postby greeban » Wed Apr 17, 2019 7:49 pm

Hi,
The ABS light on my '95 Celebration has come on; it did this a little while back but then reset OK on the next journey, and has been off until today, where I made several journeys but the light remains on :(
As mine has the later ABS system, does anyone know if the you can still use the 'blink' test to interrogate the ECU for the fault codes stored?

There is another post which has a link this test but is not working http://www.jec-xjs-forum.org.uk/xjsbb2/ ... php?t=1006

Good news is that your car has an OBD2 connector so you can plug it in to interrogate the fault.
I have a Carsoft 930i code reader which I use on my 1996 Celebration. I have to tell the reader that the car is an X300 XJ6 but that's not so far from the truth as the very late XJS shares so many major components and systems it's basically an X300 in drag. It does read ABS faults for me.
If you don't have access to a reader then a specialist with the Autologic system will be able to read the codes for you.

I don't know where you are Greeban but if in distance of southeast London, will be around this Easter if you want someone to plug in the iSoft i930 for a diagnostic read. Often it's one of the wheel speed sensors that give up or go intermittent. Also the wheel indicator can become broken or covered with filth. iCarsoft will tell which one

Another way to clear codes is to remove your battery terminal leads and tie the lead connectors together with a cable tie for 20 mins or so. Often called a "hard reset". That can clear the most stubbon on (but not all) fault codes or fault lights

Hope that helps?

Thanks for the excellent offer Richard - I am near Luton so definitely possible but this week end may be out as visiting the mother in law! What I might try is pulling some of the connections on the sensor cables as others have done. If this is unsuccessful then I will take you up on your kind offer.

Re the hard reset - what is interesting is when you switch off and restart, the ASB light does it test and goes out, but as soon as you drive off it comes on again which makes me think is likely to be one of the sensors/circuits playing up.

I don't believe it!! I decided to unplug the harness at the side of the ABS modulator to check the resistance on the pins, but then discovered by multimeter battery was dead, so put plug back in. Went for a drive and ABS light now out :)
I am hoping my issue was a case of corrosion on the pins - time will tell!

To all with ABS unit issues.

Had a persist ABS warning on my XK V8. Spoke to "Control Units" near Exeter and Sam pointed out the recurring issue with these ABS units.
The seal between the control unit and pump fails allowing water access. This damages the control unit solder joints and corrodes the pump valves and seats.
DHL'ed the unit to them. They offer a 24 hours service. They remade the solder joints, polished the pump valves and seats and remade the joint seal. Back with me in Hampshire in 36 hours at £130, complete with guarantee.

Remember that all XJS abs cars, except for the last year of production, uses a very different ABS Teves system that doesn't have the pump and control unit as part of the same unit.
