Nick,
A slight tangent to your original pos,t but there wasn't really a problem selling the last couple of years of XJSs. The introduction of the XK8 didn't have a detrimental impact on selling the last XJS Celebrations which were easily sold, unlike the last E-Types some of which were hard to shift.
There are a number of reasons why your car might not have been registered for a while (dealer demo, display car, cancelled order etc etc). If you get a heritage build certificate, it will also clarify what date it left the factory and which dealer it went to. My own car was built 2 weeks after yours, went straight from the factory to Stratstone's in London, but didn't get sold and registered until Feb 95.

Re: Overflow from brake res. filler cap
My understanding was that the V12 was quite slow selling towards the end as the AJ16 was not far behind it in performance, equal in refinement and definitely ahead on economy!
After summer 1995 V12s were only produced to order. I have come across V12 cars produced in late 1994 or 1995 but not registered until 1996 - I've even seen cars with a P reg.
As Paul says, the last Celebrations sold well. Jaguar gave a guaranteed 80% refund for trade in against a new XK8.

Re: Overflow from brake res. filler cap
David,
The prime reason for the V12 becoming order only was largely because of the lack of sales in the US market. Performance, economy and the need to meet US legislation such as compulsory OBDII meant that the V12 wasn't even exported to US from mid-95 anyway. Because the US was the prime driver of XJS sales it meant that the UK and other markets suffered from Jaguar not wanting to produce V12 XJSs. There was certainly a demand for them. The 2 customers who ordered the V12 cars that were produced in 1996 had to wait some time before Jaguar agreed to make them.
Nick,
If you get a heritage certificate you might be able to work out the reason behind the car not getting registered for some months. It may well have been a demo or display car.
