Hnad brake lever stop

Just completed a repair that involved removing the handbrake lever from the inner sill and although I have solved the Chinese puzzle of reassembling it and refitting it, can't find anywhere information on where the little black stop that's part of the forward distance piece is supposed to be positioned or how it should be adjusted.

In fact none of the diagrams in parts catalogues, Jag classic parts &c, even show the bit and nearly all of them relate to the in-board brakes which doesn't inspire confidence. Does anyone have a picture of how their unmolested mounting is assembled?
