Burning smell coming from near compressor!!!!

On my recent trip to France the air con suddenly stopped working (i was going rather fast i must admit!) and there is now a burning smell coming from under the cover (it's a 6.0) near the compressor. The fan belt is fine and not causing it and the air con clutch is not operating. The fuse has blown and keeps blowing replacements....
Does anyone have any ideas? It was so lovely and cool before and such an amazing trip!

How would i tell? The belt looks to be moving the wheel on the compressor and as i say its coming from behind it inside the cover that the 6ltrs have...
Cheers for your help!

Sorry, just a thought, I'm not familiar with the 6.0 set-up, but your comment about a burning smell indicates something seized/rubbing somewhere..........

Don't despair, I had to replace the compressor on my 3.6 a few years ago, from memory it was approx. £150.00 plus VAT from a specialist Jag spares dealer, but was heavy and awkwardly placed, so I gave the job to my local air con specialists to fit and commission.
Also, be aware that there are different versions of compressor by model/year and also by refridgerant gas used.
Best check EXACTLY the spec. before doing anything

If you don't mind me asking, how much? I'm being quoted labour of £180 to £240 for the compressor, receiver dryer, R134a valves and re-gas.
Compressors seem to be around the £200 mark, as you say. I note from
http://www.sngbarratt.com that when they sell you a reconditioned compressor they fit a brand new clutch to it. That makes it nearer £250, but is recommended by Kirby Palm!

If its the Harrison compressor, even if the clutch is in good condition its impossible to change it without the specialist extractor. A complete unit will give much more confidence.
I assume your problem isn't just the clutch electromagnet burnt out? normally if the compressor seizes, it rips the belt off but wouldn't short out the clutch electrical circuit.

Sounds about right..........I guess they'll be charging approx. £45.00/hour? So that's four hours labour if things go according to plan........
