Air con pump overhaul.

Postby ArtyH » Thu May 28, 2009 10:45 am

Hello, I have just bought an air con pump overhaul kit from JDHT Ltd, for my 1996 Celebration, it consists of a seal kit and 2 " O " rings, for a grand total of £43.46.
The seal kit is two special metal/rubber round units @ £28.89 + vat and the two rubber seals were £4.56 + vat and £5 P+P +vat.
At the time of writing I have not fitted/ tried to fit the parts. I hope it is not too difficult a task and just a case of dismantle carefully and then replace and reassemble. The pump is to be removed from the car for the surgery and it looks like a bit of a task as there is not much space in the engine bay.
I will take some photos as I go and let you know how it goes.
I needed the kit as there was a discharge from the front of the pump which sprayed onto the inner wing, the coloured dye was a dead giveaway for where it came from.

You have a Sanden compressor, right?

Never done one of those, so be interested to hear how you get on. Do you have the special tools (JD166/1/2/3, JD 167 and JD 168) to remove the shaft nut, seals and so on? Or have you a cunning scheme to get the beast apart?

I've rerplaced the seal on the Sanden compressor from a 93 4 litre, getting the compressor out of the car was easy enough, helps to be able to work under the car .
The two round things you mention are the mechanical seal, and it is easier to remove and refit with the special tools, (available from any good AC specialist), but it can be done without them, but need to be very carful when placing the seal over the shaft so as not to damage the surfaces .
You will also need to make up a puller to get the pulley wheel off the shaft as well.
Once you have rebuilt the compressor, you should fit a replacement receiver dryer as the system has been opened, and get a good AC shop to evacuate the system and test for leaks by holding a vacuum, before re-gassing.
Remember to replace the PAG oil with the correct grade.

I think the compressor in your car will be the Sanden SD7H15
Good luck

The kit has been fitted and the system recharged at Advanced Radiators in Newburn ( Newcastle ). The system was pressure tested, new pag oil fitted and then re gassed. This was done on Saturday 060609. The system worked at this time, the next few weeks/months will tell if its worked or not.
So, I removed the compressor it is a Sanden SD7H15 . There were no instructions with the kit so it had to be done by trial and error.
I removed the drive coupling by taking the nut off the drive shaft and then " knocked it off ". That exposed the drive shaft, the dog for the coupling and inside the recess of the unit the old faulty seal/fabric washer could be seen. Then the dog was removed from the shaft. I could not see how to get the old seal etc out. So I removed the cir-clip from the recess removed the fabric washer, then removed the bolts from the inside centre unit, this then allowed me to knock the seal out of the housing with a long thin bolt.
I fitted the new seal and washer, then cir-clip and tried a refit.
Bugger  it would not go over the second stage of the shaft! I had to file a smooth edge to the thicker part of the shaft, just taking the sharp edge of..no more than that! Then I introduced the seal to the shaft the wrong way around to see if it would go. This was thought best as there is a smoother edge that way and nothing to snag, the correct way has a raw edge which was catching, and would have torn if forced. It was very warm when I undertook the job and when the new seal was fitted it seemed to be in order, so it was left for an hour to get used to its new shape.
The new seal was then removed and fitted in the correct manner, the cir-clip fitted and then the fibre washer pressed in place. The front end was then refitted and then re installed on the car.
This was the way that I did the job, :?: not saying it was the best way or the easiest, took best part of the day, but part of that was making the mistakes which enabled the job to be done, so time well spent.
I did not use any special tools as I did not know there were any needed.
I will let you guys know how things go in the next few weeks/months.
If I can I will put some pics up of the job if someone can let me know how.
