XE cylinder deactivation?

Hello everyone.

Does anyone know if the Ingenium engine (petrol) deactivates a cylinder under light load, for fuel economy? I know this is common in 6 and 8 cylinder engines, but this is a 4. (20T).

Trouble is that mine, which is proudly displaying a P3403 code, seems to be under the impression that it's constantly under light load, and is running on... you've guessed it, 3. Lumpy.

It only does it after ten minutes of driving, so I can get it to its appointment to see the JLR chaps in Hayfield without doing any harm. They may be able to find out what's going on, but in the meantime I'm curious to know if this system is, indeed, part of the engine's spec.

Honda and VW apparently do it on 4 cylinder engines, so it's possible jag are at it too. I just can't find out anywhere.

I don't believe that Jaguar uses cylinder deactivation on the Ingenium I4 engine. It sounds more likely that your car is running on 4 cylinders during warm up (with a richer mixture) and then is unable to fire weaker mixtures once warm. It could be a simple air leak or a weak spark (coil pack perhaps) problem. These are complicated engines so full Jaguar level diagnostics is the usual way forward. Most diagnostic tools available can't complete a full level diagnosis. Mike.

Well, here we are with a diagnosis. It seems that a solenoid that controls the valves on cylinder number 1 has failed. This would make sense, considering the fault code.

One can't simply replace a single solenoid; they come as a unit of four that costs

1100 + vat. plus fitting, of course.

Anyone know what this part actually is? Ingenium 2.0, petrol, 200 bhp

It sounds like a failure of the variable valve lift unit, which is a one piece unit. Mike.
