rattle in the door

My XE has now developed an irritating rattle that seems to be coming from either the drivers door or the B pillar. Took the car back to Jaguar agent who took the B pillar lining off. They could not find anything loose and suggested it was the rubber seals rubbing together and have lubricated them. On the drive home the rattle is still there. I would have thought that rubber seals would squeak not rattle. Pretty sure it is coming from the door. I did read somewhere about somebody on a test drive of a new XE that had an irritating rattle in the door. Didn't say what it was but then he wouldn't know on a test drive would he ? Have to take it back again.
This car is 16 months old and has just done 5000 miles so as you can imagine I am far from impressed. When and if I find out what is causing it I will post the answer.

I would suggest that two parts are making contact within the door.

Typically it is often a long metal rod linking the internal door handle to the lock mechanism. The rod is often shielded along its length from contact with the door frame by a foam or rubber insulator. Sometimes they can move causing direct contact between parts. On other occasions loose parts can cause an issue. I can only guess that this might be the case.

Only stripping off the door card and inspecting will reveal the cause. Back to the dealer again I would think.

It's amazing how one small rattle can spoil an otherwise great experience in any car. Looked at it another way, this is exactly the type of problem that Jaguar relies upon its dealers to solve to keep owners happy. What a shame that not all Jaguar dealers seem to realise how important these things are to good customer satisfaction. Good luck with tracking down this irritation and having it put right. Mike.

Agree, really annoying. I expect some on mine at 10 years and 180,000 miles, but not on a nearly new car, poor show..

More on the rattle. Yes Mike was right. Back to the dealer. The car has now developed a rattle in the rear passenger side door also. Booked in for next week as that is the only time the dealer has a loan car available. I am afraid I am finding it very hard to get to like this car. I have also had to adjust the left bonnet catch as I noticed the bonnet was not closed flush with the wing as it was on the other side. I have had to do this twice. Just checked it after a decent run out and it seems OK . Not really what I would expect to do with a new car. Having been at the dealership recently with the first rattle (which obviously they never addressed properly) I am finding it hard to find a modern Jaguar I actually like. The new F pace I think is hideous, an absolute monster. The XJ is way too big and the dash is all chrome and black plastic, looks awful. The new XF is like an XE inside and Jaguar don't seem to want to make petrol cars now only diesels, unless you go for 5 litres. You can buy a petrol 3 litre XF but that is a lot extra and I prefer the original XF to the new one. Looking at the secondhand market all I can find are 2.2 diesel XF's. I will get this car back to them and then off to Stoneleigh. After that, if they have not fixed it, the car is going.
I am now looking at cars other than Jaguar.

"I am now looking at cars other than Jaguar".

I am not surprised, it is a frustration I share, having owned 5 over the last 15 years. Howevere it is a shame, as they definitely have something 'extra' compared to the prestige German makes, which is the main competition. Don't give up too easily!

That used to be because a Jaguar looked so stunningly different to any competition...well at least until 2008 when the World and Jaguar finally decided to copy the oppositions visual so called contemporary looks. Conformity in the company car park is of vital importance. Sticking out like a sore wotnot doesn`t lead business leaders to regard you as a team player. You scratch, I scratch, in pecking order is the name of the game. Bring on the car park universal clones.

See my comments on the XE on another post in the XE BB. I`m not that encouraging. I want a Jag that looks, drives and feels like a Jag, not a cough sweet!

Mike

If you want a small petrol engine Jaguar, it's worth noting that Jaguar has finally launched the 2 litre petrol Ingenium engine to replace the Ford-based units used until now. A US automotive site I follow also says that the current V6 petrol will be replaced by an Ingenium V6 some time in the next 3 years. Mike.

The engine in this 240p Portfolio is good and as I said in a previous post I cannot fault the performance of the car. It is fast, It handles well and it holds the road well and is good to drive. I was a little disappointed it did not have a Jaguar engine, especially as it was advertised as " An all new Jaguar ". You would not expect it to come with another manufacturers engine. I had no idea it was not a Jaguar unit until I took delivery and started the car for the first time at the dealers. I realised straight away that it was not a Jaguar engine. Too late I had taken delivery of the car. My main problem is with the finish of the car. I have come to the conclusion that Jaguar have cut too many corners with this car in their effort to get the weight down and pander to the all important emissions figures. Some of the wiring looms do not look brilliant, the split seat release buttons in the boot are constantly falling off and have to be re-clipped on. Like I side I have had to adjust the bonnet release mechanism twice. (Seems OK now). The Letter J on the word JAGUAR on the boot fell off in the first week, luckily on my drive outside my front door so I was able to stick it back on. The twin exhausts were just plain pipes sticking out of the back and looked terrible. I have now put chrome finishers on obtained from a Skoda dealer for £25. Makes the car look more finished at the back end. Inside the terrible cup holders were just two big holes in the interior which again I have dealt with by purchasing some custom made covers from a fellow club member. £19.95 plus postage. Again finishes off the inside a bit more. When you first get inside the car it does not say JAGUAR. It could be any car on the road today. Nothing jumps out at you to say JAGUAR. The only indication is the leaper on the steering wheel .
The software is constantly throwing up non-existant errors. I have had " No ABS available " twice when it was clearly working. I have had " Low battery please start engine " come up 3 times when I have just come in from a 40 mile or so run. If the battery is low after that then something is clearly wrong. I have learned that Jaguar software is far from good. I had issues on my X type and my XF . I found that if you switch everything off and lock and arm the car, leave it for 10 minutes or so then restart it, all is OK. That applies to all 3 Jaguars I have owned.

All in all, This is a car with a good performance but a poor finish and doesn't feel like a Jaguar in my view. Would I buy another one ? No. The car will go back to the dealers next week for the rattles to be sorted out but I have my doubts that it will come back totally fixed. As it is an 80 mile round trip to the nearest dealer, if it rattles after that it will go, I cannot keep going back and forth to a dealer 40 miles away. I have now lost all faith in Jaguar and feel slightly cheated that I did not get the car I thought I was getting, certainly not engine and quality wise.
I am now contemplating Mercedes, BMW and Audi as a replacement.
See how the rattle fixing goes.

Since the dealer hasn't lived up to your expectations, I would suggest escalating your complaints to Jaguar Customer service. If nothing else, your feedback might help other Jaguar purchasers and at best, Jaguar may be able to satisfy at least some of your expectations of the marque. Mike.

Got the car back today after being with the dealer for the last 3 days. They said they have greased and lubricated everything in the doors and can find no fault. They did update the software while it was there . They also told me of a known fault which causes the "service required " warning to pop up even after the car has been serviced. Driving the car back home, some 45 miles I have to admit there was not a squeak rattle or any kind of noise , so hopefully they have fixed it. Time will tell.
They gave me a diesel XE loan car which was awful. Nice colour (Italian racing red) but that was all. I now know why I stick to petrol. It was sluggish with a very noticeable turbo lag. The engine sounded like a tractor, especially when I started it this morning to take it back to the dealers. It also vibrated a lot and the engine made an awful noise in the cabin when you accelerated.
It was a pleasure to get back into my petrol 240P. Much quieter, quicker off the mark and no vibrations when standing at the lights etc. When I put some diesel in it, all I could smell was diesel for ages afterwards. At least petrol evaporates aways, diesel lingers on eveything it comes into contact with. Awful stuff.
Anyway hopefully, no more rattles. Off to Stoneleigh this weekend so maybe see some of you there. I will be down with Adrian Edwards by the car sales if you fancy a chat.
