The Ugly Series 3 Gear-lever

Postby keithmervyn » Wed Jun 21, 2006 11:14 am

:( Has anybody found or made a shorter, more attractive gear-lever than the long spade-handle used on XJS, Series 3 XJ6 etc. If so, is it obtainable and what does the fitting involve ?

Sorry, but I put the gear-lever a close second to the slab-glass headlights (I've twinned mine long ago), in the XJS UGLY-bits league !! :(

:o PS, the rest of the XJS is, of course, perfect, or we wouldn't be here !! :o

The 3.6 of course shares the same HP22 gearbox as the XJ40 which utilises the Randle-Handle 'J' gate shifter so for someone determined enough I suppose that is one route one could go along, it wouldn't help with a V12 though. Another way would be to get a spare shifter assembly from a breaker and pull the puppy apart to modify the lever to whatever length and style knob is preferred.

Personally I'm happy with the original arrangement, especially now that the original black plastic spade handle is in a wood colour to match the rest.

Thanks Pop. I also have an XJ40 Sovereign - the J-gate is great of course. Any idea what might be technically involved in swapping the XJS spade-handle for a nice J-gate ??
