Rear Wheel Bearing Adjustment/Renewal

Postby JoandKevin » Tue Jun 15, 2010 10:39 pm

After the recent MOT test we received an advisory there was slight play in the rear wheel bearings. As the car is an E reg 3.6 with only 84k on the clock, it a matter of adjusting with shims, or replacement time for the bearings. Are the wheel bearing a difficult job?

Rear Wheel Bearing Adjustment/Renewal

First, how well do you trust the MOT man? There are several points at which wear can occur in the IRS and if they are not particularly Jag savvy it might be worth getting a second opinion from a Jag specialist.

Second, while it's not an impossible job to DIY, it's not one to attempt without the manual. Reason being that a preload (as opposed to end float) is required when reassembling the joint. Just how this is achieved is described quite well in the official Jag books.

Pressing the bearing in square is another interesting challenge. You might decide to get someone else to do this bit if you don't have the necessary kit.

Having said which, I watched Rob Middleton (Dave Marks's partner and a trained Jag man) replace one on my XJ6 and even though Rob explained every step, I wouldn't feel very confident about tackling the job and I usually feel reasonably sanguine about Jag jobs up to and including engine rebuilds.
