Hydraulic Mineral Oil
Moderators:davidr, BigCatXJS, dhdove
As well as my XJS I have a XJ6. This requires Castrol Hydraulic Mineral Oil code 5966 which I do not seem to be ale to get hold of at all. Can anyone tell me is there a substitute for this or where I can buy this from as I am now getting desperate (or the car is) as I need to fill up the power steering. ]

Hi and a slightly belated welcome to the XJS -Forum
As a matter of interest, where did the spec for Castrol 5966 come from? AND What model/Series is your car?
Whilst Castrol 5966 still appears to be available in the USA I think it's long gone (or more likely superceded) in the UK.
I ran several Series 3 4.2 XJ6's both Jaguar and Daimler for a number of years and to be honest I topped up the power steering with any old bottle of TQF transmission fluid that came to hand
it never seemed to do any harm........
I think if you want to specify Castrol you can safely use "Castrol TQ-(D)" (Dexron IID and IIE spec.), £6.99/litre inc. VAT from Halfords.
I don't have an Owners handbook anymore but the Haynes Book of Lies for the Series 3 XJ12 specifies Duckams D-Matic or Q-Matic.
Hope this helps.............
............Overall I think any reputable Dexron IID/E rated TQ fluid should be fine
......... tho' you may wish to wait a little while and see if this advice is contradicted by one of the more technically minded BB Members!
Best Wishes

Hydraulic Mineral Oil
I'm trying to work this one out, so although this is the xjs forum, transmission discussion page, the problem is with the power steering on an xj6?
ok, I'm sure we can help anyway although an xj6 could be anything from a series I XK engine through the XJ40 or even a new V6.
You really need to be more specific to get any real help, I would like to say that its the special green mineral oil that's used in the XJ40 self leveling system but I daren't as I wouldn't want you to put the wrong fluid in your car.

Linda,
As Pop has said, you really need to take this issue to the XJ Forum or better still, seek technical advice from Dave Marks.
However, if you have an XJ40 that uses the combined reservoir for power steering and hydraulic suspension DO NOT fill with anything other than the correct Green Mineral fluid. You must not top it with Dexron II or other traditional ATF-type fluid.
Good Luck
