EARLY GETRAG REAR MOUNTING BUSH

Postby ogriboy » Fri Sep 26, 2008 12:02 pm

MY 1987 XJS Manual 3.6 has been grounded through lack of availability of this part No CAC 46171. Being an early unit it is not shown in dealer parts list as VIN No is to early but comes up as NLA.

I have contacted all the JEC contacts in mag to no avail. Can anyone assist with this part. Could it be worth looking at BMW as they used this box I think? :(

Thanks

Gary

EARLY GETRAG REAR MOUNTING BUSH

hi and welcome

from what i can see , the part number you have is not even listed with Jaguar , either on the heritage site, or in my parts book covering all HE cars to 1989 ,

the good news ( i think ) is that all the mounting components including all spacers, rubber and even springs are exactly the same part numbers for your manual, as an auto box, the only difference being the actual mounting bracket for auto and manual, the rest is all the same

the components can be found at the link below

http://www.jdht.com/webapp/wcs/stores/s ... &langId=-1

only the bottom component No1 is the difference between an auto box, and manual box

hope this helps

in some way

Hi,

Yes the part is not shown where you describe and is only available on Microfische at dealers because it applies to vin 132209 before the parts books now available. I suspect your theory is correct if I had the later manual as listed.

A picture of the very mount is shown in topic " Gertrag gearbox help" a bit further down the list by JONC. As can be seen this is a large metalastic type bush.

There's plenty of later manual 3.6's about. Maybe the best solution is to convert your mounting assembly to the later pattern?

I'm guessing the gearbox casting may differ, but it may just be a case of replacing the end casting. (For example, the auto-box was used by BMW, Land Rover and Volvo as well as Jaguar but the end casing is completely different.)

I expect Jaguar changed the mounting for a good reason, so unless originality is paramount the later one may be better in the long run.

Yes that's not a bad idea I will need to talk to some garage specialists. I think the reason Jaguar changed is for the same reason I need a new one.
A small warning comes with sudden increased gear lever bounce then the occassional bottoming out amidships and then.... the whole lot drops and the prop hits the cross brace. This happened approx 8 years ago on the M1 at high speed in the outside lane.

I am therefore a little keen to sort this slightly sooner!

To conclude all is well. I finally tracked a new mount down after 3 months of searches. I also obtained new spring and bushes. Having installed all =the improvement is huge and suddenly no more bottoming out sounds on country roads. The car is transformed. Now onto repair of both doors and respray back to excellent standard which i will carry out this spring temprature permitt :)
