Renewing Auto Gearbox Oil & Filter

Postby MikeB » Sun Feb 08, 2009 10:39 am

Hi,

Reading the workshop manual it appears that changing the 4.0L auto gearbox oil and filter is well within the capabilities of the DIY enthusiast!

Drain and drop the sump (including removal of the dip stick union nut). Replace the filter and gasket, refill.

Couple of questions:

- Do you really only actually drain 4.0 litres of the 10 litre capacity?
- What oil should I purchase to Dextron IID standard? Guess I will need a minimum of 5 litres. Any known suppliers would be useful.

Thanks,

Mike.

Renewing Auto Gearbox Oil & Filter

Hi Mike

You can only drain a limited amount of transmission oil because a lot is held in the torque converter not in the box. At one time companies (eg ATP Transmissions) offered a full refill scheme which involved sucking the old oil out and at the same time pumping new oil in, eventually the box was full of new oil. However this process was wasteful and expensive and I don't know if it is still offered.

I think Castrol ATF Dexron iiiD (as used in the late 4 litre cars) from Halfords etc should be fine at about £7/litre - I expect it will be available in 5 litre containers from a lube supplier.

NB Do keep your working area scrupulously clean as you don't want any foreign objects/dirt etc. going back into the box.

Good Luck
