Hi Richard - happy new year to you all.

Went to halfords and swapped the battery for a new one. The guy there was reluctant to let me have it without seeing the car. He 'advised' me that batteries are very simple things and the car probably has a problem. He did give me a replacement though, so all good on that front.

Anyhows, tried it our yesterday and car started almost immediately without any transmission light or water spray. Took it for a 30 mile drive and all was fine.

Still taking it in as I think something's amiss, plus am currently leaving the negative lead off so the battery won't drain. Only current issue is that now the sodding radio won't work...although the fuses look ok...sigh.

Something I read that was interesting is that a guy reviewing Yuasa battery I have, commented that calcium batteries shouldn't be bought as they can only be charged a max of once and then are useless as they won't hold a charge. I can find no reference to this anywhere else and as I understand that most batteries are now calcium ones, I'd be surprised if that were true...although that does seem to have happened with my experience here.
