pre he borg warner noisy update /rear spring mount

Postby keri » Tue Nov 08, 2016 11:18 pm

hello all I think I have found why my gearbox seems a little noisy it appears that the rear gearbox mount cotton reel bush was out of position ie on top of the mount bracket instead of pushed through and locked in position which has now been corrected and it is a lot better now, but there is always a but I find when all bolted back up the spring looks almost fully compressed and I have no lift or pull down in the box at all all spacers are in position as per parts manual now it is a new spring but I noticed it is black with a pink colour code on it in the 1975 part book it says the part number is c19988 and it has yellow in brackets do I have the wrong spring? any one have any ideas I have seen on xj6 and a coupe and there seem to be a lot of lift in these so im a little confused any help please I have added some pictures of the spring if it helps anyone thanks again

AFAIK there should be quite a bit of free movement, perhaps 1-2cm. Could you put a photo of the assembly on the forum?

I don't know for sure, but I guess the V12 would have a stronger spring than the 6-cyl, as it's much heavier, but with the leverage involved, that shouldn't be enough to stop the gearbox moving.
