AJ-6 or AJ-16?

I have searched the internet unsuccessfully for the difference in serial numbers between the two engines, or even photographs of the two engines to compare with mine. My XJS was manufactured in February 1994, and when I bought it I was told it has an AJ6 engine. However, when the engine number was put into Halfords MOT computer it said it is an AJ16 engine! I would tend to trust the previous owner more than Halfords, but can someone please confirm which the engine is please? The serial number is 9EPCNA192699. Many thanks in anticipation.

Hi - your engine number decodes as below

9 - manufacturer is Jaguar
E - 4.0 AJ6 (if it were an AJ16 this would be L)
C - compression ratio - 4.0 litre
P - Petrol
N - Emissions spec C
A - Original specification
192699 is the serial number (first was 100047)

We are not quite sure of the first VIN of an XJS with an AJ16 engine but its around May 1994. We had previously thought that the first AJ16 XJS was VIN 194775 but we have found cars earlier than that so the exact changeover point is a little indistinct. Please see the XJS pages in the April 2020 magazine for more detail.
As your car was manufactured in Feb 1994 it will be fitted with an AJ6 which your engine number confirms.
