79 Pre-HE running issues

Hi all,
I've searched through the forum and found a few tips, but thought I'd detail my problem and see if you've got any advice. My car is a '79 XJ-S and the following has occurred:
On a run to the garage in the rain, engine just stopped whilst slowing down. Wouldn't start (but cranked over ok) for about 5 mins, then started and ran ok.
Car has since had a partial top end strip down, down to cam covers off, for cosmetic refresh. After all was put back together, the occasional stall is again evident, but we now also have a fuelling issue: the car will suddenly start ticking (injectors) and a misfire becomes evident; this is accompanied by black smoke from exhausts and plug fouling - it acts just like a choke is full on.
Is it likely the 2 issues are related, and (whether they are or not) what could the issues be?
Would like to get this sorted PDQ as car is due a photoshoot on 19th!
Thanks, Ray.
