Phil,

I know we mentioned it right at the beginning of this thread, but did you check the inertia switch on the passenger A-post? This switch is in circuit controlling the electrical supply to the pumps and works by interrupting the live feed to the pumps. It's a simple one to check visually and also simple to check with a meter.

Just a thought.

UP DATE

I tried to jump the pumps with a v12 Battery as suggested. This worked, both pumps. However there is no power to it. I have looked at the Earth and its good. I have looked at the relays and power is there. However there is on power to the pump relay. has no power to it.

So it looks like a electric issue, no power to the pump.

Do you think this might be a fuel control module or Fuel injection ECM issue?

Any help would be very helpful as I have got this far with your help & I just want to drive it badly !!!

Just a thought.. I don't think fuel pump(s) are supposed to run until the engine is actually running. It's a safety thing if I remember rightly, that is if one of the injectors is leaky, it prevents the cylinder filling up with fuel.
When the engine is turning, the pump should start up, it stops if the engine stalls while the ignition is still on.

I guess to gather more information about the problem, the pump could be temporarily connected to a supply, and while it's running like that, see if the engine starts. Bear in mind the possible risk of there being a leaky injector present, so you don't want to be leaving the pump running more minutes than neccesary.

When the ignition key is turned and the 'warning lights' come on, there should be a brief pump run for a fraction of a second. It'll only do that the once, each time you do that. Unless I'm mistaken, I'm saying: don't be expecting the pump to be running until the engine is actually turning.

Phil,

If I've understood your post correctly, you say that the relay has power in but no power is being passed out to the pump. That seems to imply that either the relay is at fault and is not throwing open, or else it isn't receiving the feed to throw it. If you suspect the relay it would be simple to swap for the relay for the one feeding fuel pump 2 and see if that cures the problem.

The relay for Fuel Pump 1 takes its feed from the Fuel Injection Control Module. The relay for Fuel Pump 2 takes its feed from the Fuel Pump Control Module which itself takes an engine speed signal. So its the Fuel Injection Control Module signal that you would need to check as the car will start fine without Fuel Pump 2.

It feels like you're getting there, just a couple more checks to make and you'll have cracked it. Let's hope it's something simple like the relay failing.

Paul

Hello Mrb39 I have not tried this, but I do know what you are talking about

"Also before you bin your fuel pump check the positive lead on your Battery.
If you follow it down, you will find a small cover on the positive lead and going into this are two positive Taps (leads) they are your normal spade type
connectors, and can come off quite easily, espescially if you have been changing battery or just cleaning in that area.
One of these taps/leads attatched to the positive lead feeds the fuel pump."

When I was looking I also found a socket, look like an old printer socket under the battery. does any one know what this is? Do you think its for the phone?

Cheers Phil

Phil,

Based on what you've said, I would check things in the following order:

- Check the fuse for Fuel Pump 1 - it's Fuse 12 (20a) in the 12-way fuesbox in the right rear of the boot

- Verify that the relay for Fuel Pump 1 works correctly.

- Check that the relay is taking the signal correctly from the Fuel Injection Control Module. Check at the relay, and you could also check the signal from the module. It's pin 15 which is the second pin from the left on the top row as you look at the module.

If you do these tests, I think you will have pinned down where the problem is.

Good luck

Paul

Hello Paul, I have looked at the Fuse in the boot, I have swapped in the the relays.

But still no luck. :(

The fuel Control does this live near to the relays? If so I have NO power! But I also have no power to the boot light, but all the other lights work.

Phil,

Just to clarify:

Are you saying that there is a main power feed to the relay but no trigger signal hitting the relay to throw it? This is the feed that you need to check on the relay.

I think the fuel injection ECM is in the boot at the front on the right.

I don't think the boot light not working has got anything to do with the problem!

Phil, it really feels like you should have a decent parts & service CD if you're going to do work on your car. The one you need is the official Jaguar one available from Jaguar Classic Parts. It's JHM 1176.

Just a thought - why don't you ring David Marks & ask him for his advice. It's what he gets paid for.

Good luck

Hello, The boot light come off the same wiring loom, I was just thinking it might have some thing to do with the lack of power. The ECM is in the boot, I also have JHM1176

But David Marks, Mmm, good idea. I will give that a go today. Thanks. Phil

OK I have some progress at last the engine fires, however just for a seconds at the most. But this is progress and, now I have a flat battery. The DTC says I the FF49

Now how did I get it to start? We I changed The 2 Fuel pumps relays and relay pump switch (the one with the red line on it) So I guess it must be one of the new relays the I have put in.

I did chat to David Marks, and Im sad to say to that I got more information from you guys, than from him. I got the impression that he was to busy or he did not want to know. Never mind life is a jag........

Thanks 4 everything, I really mean it. Phil

Phil,

Sounds like you've nearly cracked it. Look at Section 4 in your CD - Engine Management & go to Fuel Injector & you'll find the FF49 code. All the comments that I've given on this thread are things that I've looked up on that CD. All the answers are in there, somewhere!

Good luck
