Engine Corrosion

Postby Woodsy » Tue Jun 26, 2018 11:23 am

I have attached 2 images of the corrosion I am experiencing with my 3yr old F-Type (obviously just out of warranty).

It was triggered by one of the fuel injectors failing, as they were initially unable to remove the faulty injector due to its condition it had rusted into the housing, they then had drill it out and remove part of the cylinder head to do so. (this was performed by an independent specialist)

I have since been in discussion with JLR who are going to replace some of the damaged parts. Although they have yet to discover the cause, so my worry is is this going to happen in another years time?

Is anyone else aware of this issue? It may be something to look out for

Not had any other reports like this one. Please keep us up to date with developments. Mike.

Quite difficult to say from the photos but those bolts look to have disintegrated. It looks like it has been through sea water or regularly parked on a sea front road. Have you owned it long, surely you wouldn't have bought it in that condition.

How are the subframes and other areas that are well known to rust?

I have owned it from new, I live nowhere near the coast so doubt it is related to salt water. All other areas are clear of rust.

The local independent garage suggested it might be to do with the location of the air inlets on the bonnet allowing the water to fall on to the engine and if it doesn't clear then that could cause it. But that would be a significant design flaw

I've no F-type, and don't normally read these forums, but as I happened to be passing...

The second picture shows what appears to be an oval "washed" area centred around what appears to be a break in the rocker box cover (? the dark bit held down by the remnants of the bolts in question). There's a tide-mark that starts by the left-most bolt, and rises towards the centre of the round thing on the right. (You can tell I know nothing of F-types!) I wonder if a flaw in the casting allowed something corrosive, coolant most likely, to spray over the area.

It will probably be either a well-known pattern of dirt blowing over the engine, or something to do with cleaning the area for inspection, but maybe there's something more going on.

I have just had an injector fail and the two others on the same bank (3.0l V6) misfire. Whilst attempting to replace all three, the Jaguar dealer has struggled to remove two of them due to corrosion between the injector and the head.
They are claiming they will have to remove the engine to get the head off to remove the injectors. Does that sound right?

That solution does sound particularly drastic but there are quite a few reports of injectors corroding into cylinder heads resulting in head damage when attempts have been made to remove them. If your garage has found a way of saving the head which requires engine removal, it may be cheaper than damaging the head in situ. Mike.

There's a company called AP Diagnostics who specialise in removing stuck injectors (it's a problem across many makes of car). They are based in Darlington. Sometimes cars are trailered to them, or I believe they do travel which is at a cost, but probably cheaper than taking the head off etc.

Some JLR dealers use them. Their website is an intersting read

An excellent find! I'll try to remember the details. Unsurprisingly, stuck injectors seem to be becoming more common as the directly injected engines age. Mike.

Also Swallows int he south west have worked on numerous of these engines and have developed their own in house techniaues for dealing with stuck injectors - they are an independent jaguar specialist and give a discount to JEC members - although you need to tell them you are a member when you are booking in.
