Return to the fold

Postby Tels new moneypit » Mon Apr 07, 2025 11:58 pm

Hello!

My name is Terry Cubberley, my old membership number was (and I can remember it clearly!) was 44438. My forum name was 'Tels Money Pit'.
I first joined the JEC in 2000 (?) It must be because I purchased my 3.6 XJ-S from the classifieds in the magazine. Signal red reg: G176 TKO which I was very hands on with, replacing body panels, front subframe, rear suspension, brakes, head gasket etc, I also posted up advice on changing the pathetic dash lighting to LED! I also owned 2 nearly identical X-Type sportbrakes before moving on to a 1997 XK8. When I purchased the XK I stored the XJ-S in the works underground car park until I was ordered to find another home for it. I had it trailered to a 'restoration' business in bedfordshire for them to look after until I had the funds for them to start work. To cut a long story short, when I finally had the money for the resto, I went to check on the car only to find that the business had folded and that the liquidator had seized all the cars in the yard! Anyway, XK8 ownership carried on in a love/hate relationship until @ 3 years ago when, because of a recurring phantom ABS warning light, I took the car to a Jaguar specialist for its MOT with the instruction to put the light out permanently and put a ticket on it. Well, it failed on corrosion of front subframe mountings....That was the final straw. I was quoted £1.5 K to do the work! In hindsight, I should have coughed up, Instead I scrapped the XK8 and bought (sight unseen on ebay!) an ALFA ROMEO BRERA! (don't laugh, my pain is your gain) I convinced myself that I needed a two door stylish affordable coupe with a bit of grunt, and Jaguar, with its then new F-Type was, price wise, was way out of my league. I had the Alfa inspected by the local Alfa specialist and they gave me two sides of A4 with a list of faults and costs to remedy of £5K! after the pain of ownership for a month, I chopped the Alfa in for a lovely XJ6. Nothing wrong with the car (apart from, again an ABS warning light) that came on and wouldn't go away..sent to the specialist and £300 later for a complete half shaft and ABS ring,(which couldnt be changed seperately). That was it for me and Jaguar. I want a car that doesn't end up in the shop for days on end, is stylish, two door coupe with maybe a hatch? Disgusted by the fact that Jaguar couldn't provide me with a: an XE estate (missing my X Type) and B: an affordable 2 door coupe, I threw my toys out of the pram and quit the JEC! I then chopped in a little pension and bought a Volkswagen Scirocco 2.0 TSI GT MANUAL transmission and FSH. I've had the Kubelwagen for 3 years now, with no major issues. I still love the thing BUT I still keep my eye in with eBay....So, today I took delivery of a 2018 P340 F-Type with MANUAL transmission, and FSH from a dealer the other side of the country ........Please tell me I haven't been a silly boy again...Sorry about the life story, but I'm back in the nest with a new identity!

Welcome back to the fold! You know what they say, 'The grass is always greener on the other side of the hill.' You're living proof that it isn't if you want a stylish performance machine. Fingers crossed that the F-Type fulfils your dreams and behaves itself! :D Mike.

Welcome back indeed, and good choice of car. Just have the rear sub frame checked for corrosion. If it’s all good, have it undersealed as a precaution. Enjoy the drive!
