Happy New Year!

I currently use Castrol Classic 20w50, but have used Halfords Classic 20w50 in the past.

I'm off to Bicester Heritage on Sunday for their "Sunday Scramble". The former RAF Bicester - interesting place (currently mainly used for gliding), having started as an early RAF station. It retains almost all of it's operational structures and the owner is gradually restoring them and leasing them out to classic motor businesses, which are open to visitors during events.
Here's a short video from the VSCC Winter Driving Tests there last month: https://youtu.be/MWXoikRI_LQ
Apologies for wanering off topic...

Thanks for the video Roy, I didn't realise you had done so many, quite the Simon Kidson a? No worries about wandering off topic, the Memsahib and I will be wandering off to the Canaries for a month next week so I will not be posting anything.
Thanks for the oil update, it would seem that Castrol 20/50 is the type preferred type so I will change to that when I have finished running in.
Where do you get it and is available at any discount such as being a club member etc.

Chaps,
Maybe a little early on New Years Day but "Engine oil" On the wonderful XK engine, I assume we all use 20/50 but has anyone found a supplier with a higher/better API rating than SE ? The highest I have found on the API site is SJ but I haven't seen this on any 20/50, anyone got better info please.
Is a higher API rating always better for the XK engine? Whilst the grading is generally backwards compatible I read the following "...you have to pay attention to the year of construction of the engine. If the engine is too old, modern chemistry might not be adapted or compatible with old engine designs and materials...."

Personally I use Castrol Classic 20w 50 in my 1971 4.2 litre, but confusingly the container does not bear an API rating stamp!

Robbie,
Thanks for your input. Castrol certainly seems to be the oil of choice and, even without any indication, I assume it must be at least API SE which I think is good for engines up to and including 1979 so we are all o.k.

Thanks Reg - found it on the Castrol web site now. I do find all this variety a bit confusing (anno domini I expect). In the old days I would have just used Castrol GTX (as per the Jaguar 1971 handbook recommendation) but I think the current "GTX" is an entirely different formulation, and apparently not suitable. I went out the other day for "DOT 4" brake fluid and was confronted with a shelf full of "DOT 4 Fully Synthetic" - just a marketing ploy I suspect but it took me a while to figure out that it is the same stuff and that "Fully Synthetic" doesn't indicate that its suitability has altered.

Robbie,
You certainly aren't alone in the " anno domini" feeling but, hey, we are all having fun so what the hell. Your S1 Sovereign must be a quite rare beast by now. I very rarely see S1's of any type during the season but to my eye, after the MK2 they are the best looking car Jaguar ever produced.

There's a lovely white one (with black vinyl roof) that lives near me. So tempting! :)

Roy,
Go on you know you want to !!!! What about Neil's ,mail, have you read it yet? It would seem to suit our needs and desires far more than we could have hoped. All I need to do is work out how to access it, I do have a facebook account ( don't know how ) but I have never used it and am completely clueless as how to get started. Something to keep me busy during the dark evenings.

Reg,
Yes, I've seen the Facebook group, but unfortunately I don't do social media (I'm anti-social!). :P
I know many people who live their lives on line, but it's not for me (certain forums and photo-sharing excepted).

Roy,
After my exploits trying to fathom out how to use Face ache, I don't blame you for not bothering. Neil has been helping me to get around it and a couple of blokes on the site have been really helpful but I still find it very confusing.
Neil reckons it is set up for 12 year olds and therein lies the problem, I'm too old !!!.
