Central Locking

I changed the battery the other day. Now the central locking doesn't work. Anyone know if it needs reseting or something?
BTW: The Halfords HCB075 "Calcium Technology" 4 year guarantee battery (£70) was too large at the top for the battery clamp. Swapped it for a HB075 3 year guarantee one (£60) and it fits fine.

Dave, what year/model?
Past experience tells me that XJ-S central locking is a finnicky beast and it could just be coincidence. Have you had problems previously? Does it not work AT ALL on any door opening or locking or are you getting weird variations in the fault eg passenger door locks only, drivers door unlocks only etc.
If nothing at all, fuse blown on battery change? .
If pre facelift I don't think it needs to be re-set, it either works or it doesn't

1990 / 3.6 Coupe.
I thought the fuse, since the whole lot doesn't work. So I got the manual out and looked for a fuse labelled "central locking", but there seemingly isn't one.
Anyone know which one it is? Else I'll go through them all with a mulitimeter I guess.

Dave,
This might sound a silly question, but is it a case of the Central Locking not working when using the door key, or the Central Locking not working when trying to lock the car using the alarm fob?
The key-based Central Locking should not be impacted by disconnection of the battery but resetting the alarm circuit can be necessary.

I dream of having a key fob. That's log gone. A buzzer to tell me that I've left the lights on is something that the boyz in Coventry forgot too.
Back on topic ... previously when I turned the key in either door, the other door and boot unlocked/locked, but now it doesn't.
I do have an alarm ... it beeps as I get out of the car and a red LED flashes. I don't have a key fob for that either though.
I do have a "valet switch", the function of which I'm uncertain (something to do with turning the alarm off whilst my car is being valet parked). I do like that kind of extravagance about Jaguars (I'd like a non-extravagent lights-on buzzer too). I also like the warning light that comes on to tell you there's a warning light on. You don't get humour like that in modern instrument panels.

Indeed; it's now fixed. I put the car through the car wash and now the central locking works just fine. I'm going to leave it alone now.

are you going to let the rest of us into the secret location of this Lourdes type car wash for the XJS?

I put the car through the car wash.
I once saw the remnants of an XR3i after going through a car wash that some chavs had tied large steel nuts to the bristles.

Hi there, I have been reading through these posts and have the problem also. I lent my battery to a neighbour. He returned it and after fitting it back the central locking has packed up. Nothings changed, I can hear Relays clicking over but no motor action. The fuse that is in line also supplies the mirrors, and they work ok. So the fuse is ok. I noticed on the wiring diagram that there is also is a thermal relay. Could this be the problem? if so would anyone know where it is located? or am i missing something. When i activate the key, I can hear relays clicking, so I wondered if anyone knows what would be wrong, and what i need to check. Your help is much appreciated.
