Hi I need to replace my battery,I have an early (92) facelift convertible,is there a definitive answer to which battery I need ie: that will fit as I have read previous posts but seems so many ifs and buts! Also I read it should have a breather pipe connected I can't seem to find a battery that has this facility, I have the clamp that fits over the top of battery I have seen some that have a bottom clamp.

Regarding your new battery. We had a few messages going in October this year.
My advice would be for you to phone or email Lincon batteries of Leigh on Sea, Essex, as they still make them for your car. Their phone number is 01702 528 711 and their email is www.lincon.co.uk. The last one I bought from them was £69.00 and fitted by them. They are open on Saturday mornings as well.

There will be absolutely no problem finding the correct battery for your car from any of the usual battery suppliers. The only issue is knowing which size to buy as many of the reference docs that the suppliers use have the wrong battery size for facelift XJSs.

Just measure your battery and then look up the size numbers to which I referred and you'll find the right one. Start by looking at 096 size which is the one that fits the late XJS convertible. It's easy to see the dimensions for each size battery on all the usual supplier websites. Certainly www.tayna.co.uk shows them. As regards the top clamp on your car. Can you post a pic here so we can seee? I think that nearly all batteries (with possible exception of dry cell or gel batteries?) will have breather output pipes. You just connect your existing breather pipe to it.

As mentioned, I got mine from www.tayna.co.uk who were great on spec, price and service.

It's Christmas so push the boat out and treat your car to the best battery made - an OPTIMA coiled gel cel one. Totally sealed and truly maintenance - free, no corrosive fumes and no need of any vent pipe.

They cost over £100 but if you are keeping the car I think the cost is well spent . You need a Red Top one for max starting power. I have had one for 7 years and it still almost throws the engine out of the car. Have a look at their website.

I recently had a similar dilemma. I changed my battery (or rather a local to me specialist did) last year for a good quality make 590, 60 Amp battery. To be absolutely fair it never failed to start the engine but was on occasion (after say a two/three week no use) turn over really slowly. On my local (good bloke) motor factor took his advice and put in a 600, 62 which has done the trick. This battery is branded but does it for me.

I have just bought a new battery yesterday from Lincon for my XJS celebration.

It cost me £69.00 with a £5.00 discount and included fitting as well as scrapping the old one. The fitting chap tells me that I bought my old one 5 and bit years ago and it was no longer holding the charge as well as it should.

Anyway I thought it was a good price and it is going to stop me having to keep leaving the car on charge when parked at home.
