remote central locking problem

Hi,

have an odd problem with the central locking on my car - it's a 1994 standard (non celebration) xjs, nothing after market fitted as far as I know.

This morning, the central locking worked fine when I drove the car, but when I stopped it, the car wouldn't lock, however, plipping the remote gave the alarm triggered beep and then a continuous stream of quieter beeps. Opening the door triggers the alarm, and plipping the remote again disables it as you'd expect.

I can lock the doors fine using the key. The central locking from in the car doesn't seem to work though.

This afternoon, I can now lock the doors using the key and for some reason the string of random beeps stopped happening (so, no longer suspect the alarm of being broken), so I can lock the car manually and set the alarm with the remote fob.

Strangely, the seatbelt not fastened beep also seems to be a lot quieter than it used to be.

has anyone on this board experienced a similar issue? any ideas how to solve it? If not, it'll be going back to a Jag specialist and no doubt that'll be a new central locking system and a big hole in my wallet...

Things I am fairly sure it isn't:
The car battery - 'cos it's new, the car starts, the alarm sounds, etc.
Fuses - 'cos I found a wiring diagram and apparently the same fuse for locks does the door mirrors as well, and they're still working

Things I think it could be:
Anything else, I'm clueless! Any ideas would be appreciated..

Thanks!
Ian

...it took me until today, when I arrived at a petrol station, to discover that when the central locking doesn't work, then it becomes impossible to open the fuel filler cap as that locks with the car.

Luckily I had enough petrol to get home - and a spare car there, always sensible with an XJS? - but a warning to anyone else whose locking fails, get it fixed before you run out of petrol!

No doubt there's a clever way to go in through the boot but I haven't found it yet.

...and finally

further investigation finds it was in fact a fuse and the circuit diagram I had found was just incorrect...

There is a manual release mechanism - a plastic ring attached to a release wire - in the left hand recess of the boot just above where the CD player is mounted.

Hope that helps

I have a similar problem in that the alarm works, in fact too well with people omly having to go within 5ft of the car, but the doors and boot will not lock.

I can hear the solenoids working and I can manually lock the boot and passenger door but not the driver's door. It just will not lock.

Any ideas please?

Thanks

Brian

XJS Alarm Problem:
I am also experiencing a problem with the alarm system. Just recently the battery completely died and I changed it for a Knight type. On connecting it the side lights started flashing and the alarm ''bleeped''
In the past I have managed to reset the alsrm with the electronic fob but not this time. Any ideas please. I suspect it may be the battery in the electronic fob but todate have not been able to source a replacement. Two Jag garages have been unable to help - no information given in the parts manual.

Glyn.
