CD player installation

Postby Telsmoneypit » Sat Feb 04, 2006 2:30 pm

Once the weather gets a bit less hostile, I'm planning to fit a 6 disc changer in the boot (off side).
Can anyone who has already done this advise me of the best route for the cabling to the head unit? I've had a look but I cant see an obvious route past the fuel tank.
:?

Terry - The early facelift at least had the wiring there. This being located in the boot inside the well just behind the nearside rear wheel and could sometimes take a bit of finding. To be honest I'm not entirely sure if your variant was so equipped but I thought that it was.

Thanks Nick, no, my car is late pre facelift and has no wiring for the CD multichanger installed. I guess I'll have to get the back seat out and have a poke around, I might be able to 'share' a grommet with the aerial cabling...

I have done this. Remove the rear seat and then an arm rest which may contain a speaker. You should be able to poke the wiring through a gap above the fuel tank. Best to thread a stiff wire through and then tie the control wiring to it .... then pull.

Not a multichanger, but I installed a JVC CD/RDS unit last year. It only took some minor modifications to make it fit. I'm very pleased with the sound it gives and it was cheap too.

Pop, it looks the biz. Why is it modern CD players and radios don't look out of place in an XJS, when they do on almost every other classic car? I have a modern flip front thing in mine which looks as if Jaguar intended it to be there. Perhaps the interior design of the XJS is not so rubbish as all the pundits claim!

Pretty much agreed except I think that the really barry-boy head units can look really silly with all sorts of flashing lights and cheap-looking gimmics - just not right for the inside of such a classy motor.

I researched a new stereo quite carefully and think I made the correct choice in the end. The requirements were that it should fit in with the general ambience of the interior, be able to accept an iPod line-in, play mp3-CDs and preferably have DAB as well. Of course sound-quality was also a major consideration.

The unit I chose does all these things and I think the addition of an iPod cradle makes quite a well-specified sound system, that is nicely under-stated. It helpe that I managed to find a real bargain on eBay, too!

Although the fitting was pretty much a doddle, I still have to work out how to anchor the iPod cradle so that it's nice and secure but doesn't get in the way of the gear lever, radio or air con controls.

Didn't realise that my vent temerature switch was quite so manky ;-)

Barry-boy head units - I like it...

I guess if you are going to spend £10K on larging up a Vauxhall Nova, having a silly stereo fits in with the overall stupidity of it in any case.

Your kit looks good. Me personally, as long as I can get Radio 3 and 4 reasonably well, I am happy. The kit in my car was fitted by the previous owner.
