High Level Stop / Brake Lamp for Celebration Coupe?

Hi

Has anyone ever fitted a High Level Stop (Brake) Lamp to a late model Coupe? Is there an existing connection on the loom that can be used?

Are you talking about the official Jaguar part?

As you probably know, there were two different installations - a boot-mounted one available for Convertibles and a rear windscreen-mounted one for Coupes.

The boot-mounted ones use wiring underneath the boot lid trim. If it's not there, you can run a wire to the existing brake lights.

If it's the original glass-mounted one, I'm guessing there was a wiring loom connection fitted in overseas market cars, but I don't know if it's there for UK cars. You might need to ask a US owner to advise you. If you can't find one here on our Bulletin Board, you could try Jag Lovers for advice.

the Coupe has an ' adaptor loom ' that runs into the boot area over the nearside rear light , and plugs into the ' caravan electrics multi plug '

yes , your XJS has one of these , lol

the mounting is by way of bonded on lugs on the rear screen its self, and these were only fitted to the facelift cars, where the rear screen is exactly the same as earlier cars , the bonded lugs are already on the screen from new, and the rear light slides over the lugs and down

the strange thing is, that all the high level rear brake lights ( X308 included ) are the same ,

i have retro fitted this to my own car, and looks good when fitted ,

Regarding the fitting of a high level stop light.

PaulE and myself did them on facelift coupes about three years ago. We bought the lights from Ken Jenkins Jaguar spares and we had a wiring loom made up in Notingham. I cannot recall the name of the loom manufacturer but it was very simple. Then we mounted the light to the back window shelf and dropped the wiring through the rear vent into the boot. We then ran the cable round the offside to the stop light terminals. They have been working well ever since.

Mine is a 1994 Coupe (AJ16) and has a rear window mounted brake lamp so I'm guessing that the wiring is there.

You will need a lead to connect the lamp to the contact point on the car which BrianH and myself obtained from Autosparks in Nottingham at very modest cost and made while Brian waited - very obliging firm who advertise regularly in the Club magazine. My car did not have the special mounting on the rear glass so I devised an alternative which I will photograph and send to you if you need it. Photo shows mine having its first test. These lights are a very valuable safety addition as the rather stupidly blacked out lenses on our cars don't help with clear visibility and must have been thought up by some twit who thought they would make the car more 'trendy'.

I have checked with Ken Jenkins and he still has a few in stock and for sale. His number is in the mag.

My window doesn't have the lugs, but the lamp came with the mounting brackets and it looks like these can be re-attached using mirror stick pads.

Rather then go down the vents, I am going to try and find the loom connector - if I can get the rear seat back out! (see my other post today..). Is this why you went for the vent option PaulE / BrianH? Any tricks to getting the seat back out on a Facelift model?

I am replacing the headliner at the same time as it started to droop.

If you get the CD 'Jaguar XJS 4.0 litre Parts and Service Manuals 1991 - 1996' from JDHT you will find a section on wiring looms and on page 90 an illustration of the HL brake light and wiring connection. The lamp end is HL2 and the loom end HL1 clearly shown. On the strength of this info I too removed the rear seat complete (surprisingly without your difficulties as I am no genius when it comes to things engineering) but any sign of HL1 or HL2 was there none. That is why I decided to devise my own wiring connected to the brake lights in the boot. I suspect you will still need a lead to the lamp itself even if you find the proper connections. Interested to hear how you get on. Did the fixings for the lamp come from some which were once stuck to the rear glass?

Thanks for all the suggestions & help - I eventually ran the cable down between the rear screen and the parcel shelf, taking it through the vent into the boot and wiring it into the offside brake light.

An outstanding opportunity comes up in the current (Jan 2014) issue of the magazine as I see that the proper high level brake lights are being advertised at a very cheap price of £20 by David Manners on page 51. I seem to remember that Jaguar Heritage used to list them at £96 so it really is a great deal not to be missed, and a valuable addition to our cars.

Bear in mind that independent suppliers such as Manners and Barratts only source their genuine Jaguar parts from Jaguar Classic Parts, so you can probably buy them cheaper from your local jaguar dealer and no delivery charges. The lamps are £19 + vat from JCP and a decent dealer will give you at least 20% discount.

Note that if you don't have the rear screen with mounting brackets you will need to get these as well and I couldn't see these on the JCP site.
