Can anyone help! advice required on the type and size of the top bolt of the starter motor, and how do you get to it. Someone has told me that there is a rubber bung in the bulkhead or footwell, which allows access to top bolt.
Is this correct, also I have been told that the head of the bolt at the top has a byhex head, not sure what that is. Any advice would be appreciated.
Best regards David Courtney.

You may get more replies by posting in the xjs section, but I believe the tool needed is an 7/16” 12-point socket.

As Pop says, it's a 12 point bolt and a wobble joint was really useful for getting on there.
It's a difficult beast to photograph, here's my attempt:

You will need to use 3/8 socket 12 point with an extension and ratchet. I found that my 1/2 inch socket set was too big to allow access.
You can just reach it alongside the transmission tunnel. I am not aware of there being an inspection hole.
The length of the extension is a factor. I tried two before finding the best length.
Why are you removing it? sadly when I removed my motor I found the fault was a dry joint on the solenoid connector. Could have repaired it in situ had I inspected it more carefully before removing the starter.
The original starter motor is very robust, large enough to start small lorries.
Regards Kels.

Re: removing v12 xjs starter motor
Hi! I was trying to remove cast manifolds as gaskets had failed, i remove front on drivers side but it appears that one nut is covered by starter. so thought that i might remove it as it has been on the car since 1988. and thought i might fit new brushes and check it out. regards dave courtney.

Dave you are a brave man, I have removed and replaced two starter motors and have to admit that the experience is one that stays with you.
I used a long extension bar from below to undo my downpipe, You need to remove it before you have room to take the starter out.
Sort of catch 22 in your case.
I managed to reach the nuts on the downpipe with my 1/2 inch socket set. One stud sheared off, Jaguar had thoughtfully tapped spare holes in the manifold and after buying replacement studs and brass nuts I managed to replace the downpipe. You rotate the collar round the manifold and remove or cut of the redundant stud.
Jaguar had used steel ones that had welded to the stud.
You also have to lower the steering rack to get the starter out.
I have never removed the manifold, if you remove the downpipe will it help access?
