Identity and Function of this Component?

Hello,
Okay, from a XJ12 Series 3 but presume that also fitted to the XJ-S?
I am rebuilding from a huge box of bits where I am checking the wiring and refitting, however, there are some parts that do not appear in my wiring diagram ... the gold-coloured item riveted to the cross-member that looks like a resistor in a heat-sink obviously does 'something' associated with the Headlamp Dip Beam (Blue Wire with Red Line) both in and out, but cannot fathom out what its purpose might be - picture below:

Any clues to what it is called and what it does please?

Hello Mr Souter,
Yes...indeed you are on the right lines...it is the H/Lamp Dim/Dip Module, part number DAC5322 and is also on my later XJS, but not too sure when they started to use it on other models.
I am definitely no auto electrician, but I think when the lights are on normal dim/dip mode, this module keeps the current down for this dipped circuit. I could be wrong but I have always believed that about this funny little gold thing.
I guess it was designed as it is, as there is some heat generated, so on my car it is placed flat on the cross panel before the oil cooler rad.
By the way...if anyone needs to replace it, some aftermarket ones from David Manners Jaguar parts are only £4.
