I have just connected a trip computer to my 4 ltr coupe, are the buttons up the left and right hand sides supposed to light up? the unit I bought on ebay seems to work fine except for the above.

A couple of comments about lighting on late XJS trip computers:
There are two aspects to the lighting. The display should be backlit. It uses two bulbs fitted in the top of the unit. They can be removed by turning them 1/4 of a turn anti-clockwise. The bulbs are available but the part numbers quoted in the Jaguar Classic Parts on-line parts catalogue are incorrect. I have the right part number if you need it.
The switch panels on the left and right of the unit are lit by 2 leds on the main circuit board. It is possible to get to this board but be careful because the clips on the back of the unit that release it become brittle and can snap. The left and right switch panels are ONLY illuminated when the vehicle lights are turned on, at which point the backlit main display also dims. The brightness of the left and right switch panels is fixed and not adjustable via the instrument rheostat.
If the switch panels don't illuminate with the lights turned on, it will almost definitely be the leds burnt out. If you carefully take the circuit board apart, you will see what I mean. Any half-competent electrician could fit you a couple of new ones for not much money.

I see two bulbs on the trip computer page, with no indication of where either fit, but the parts cat suggests JLM12199 is used from VIN 185820.
Does that match your info?
The one I don't think I need (LHD5180AA) is one sixth the price!

I will check the LED's in the unit, if I do need them where is best to get them from?
Also any ideas on a wood facia for the unit?

My Thanks to Phil who sold me a dash trim for my trip computer and to Paul for his advise on removal and refit all went well today and trip computer now fitted and working.
