Yes, here i am again! I've now got my original Jaguar Clarion radiocassette back from retroaudio having decided to have it refurbished to replace the current aftermarket Sony on my 1988 3.6. I havn't taken the current one out yet, but any tips on refitting the old one? When i bought the car i was given the Jaguar radio in a box with 2 metal L shape brackets. Presumably these are to attach the radio to the dash, but a) is it obvious how, when the Sony is taken out ? and b) will i need 36 small fingers ?

Paul - its not hard to do and its good news that you have the brackets.
First pull the 2 heater control knobs off from either side and then undo the thin nuts that hold the heater control panel in place. Once you've got the panel off you will see where the stereo mounts.

Paul,

It may be different in the pre-facelift cars, but I did an article on an audio upgrade a few years ago.

In my car, Jaguar used L-shaped brackets which MAY be similar to your setup.

Some of the photos have got lost in the website relaunch but I'll tidy those up later. However, I've inserted the pics relating to the brackets. Hope that helps. See here:

The principles on the pre-facelift cars are pretty much the same although there are differences in the actual parts

Thnaks again guys. Whilst my bracket looks a little different, i can now understand how they mount to the radio which wasn't clear to me before. Until i take the Sony unit out i won't know what was done previously to adapt the wiring to connect it however. I'm hoping there's a simple adaptor that i can take off and simply plug the original one back in. Of course we all know that won't be the case but it helps to be positive! I'll update you when i have a chance to get the car out again.

Paul,

As per my thread, I used a standard ISO-to-Jaguar adapter that cost a couple of quid, in case I wanted to put it back to standard in the future.

Let's hope the PO used something similar on your car rather than cutting the wiring.

Previous owner paid someone to do it so has no idea how it connects. I'm crossing my fingers it is as you suggest.

I recommend spending some time with a wiring diagram and whatever info you get with your radio and "Jaguar adapter". It should be OK, but I replaced my original Jaguar radio with a more modern unit, and the wires in the Jaguar plug turned out not to be where the adapter expected them to be. I've no idea if this was "as shipped", or whether some previous owner have done something stupid and moved the connections.

AFAIR, the wires and pins in the Jaguar plug can be teased out by inserting a very fine screwdriver or similar to lift the retaining tang on each pin, and then just a tug on the wire and out it comes.

Hi again guys........so, having got the original refurbished radio back i've taken out the replacement sony radio. The original wires appear to still be there just adapted to fit a newer block connector for the replacement. It all looked pretty complicated, but taking my time to work through it (and after ordering some new connectors)i find:
Firstly i can forget about the 3 CD changer cables. Next, the aerial and 8 speaker wires are as they should be, along with the earth. The power lead from the radio is white/pink which corresponds with the car diagram i have and there is a matching white/pink from the car so presumably that's the power. However, i also have a purple wire with a PERM + on from the car which i assume means it is live permanently. (maybe from an old phone connector?) I also have a wire noted ANT remote with a spade connector from the radio and there is a purple wired empty spade connector from the car which hopefully should be connected? (The wiring diagram i have shows a purple wire from the aerial but it looks as if it changes to a white/pink after the aerial delay, having said that the diagram is very crowded and small in that area so difficult for me to make out). I am hoping that somone can point me in the right direction re: which is the best power cable to use and which is the correct aerial wire from the car?

Sadly I can't offer much insight, other than give you a larger picture which hopefully will help.

Thanks for the diagram; that's much better than the one i've got so should help. Also the guy who refurbed the radio is going to let me know if he can identify which wire is which exiting the rear of the radio. I'll let you know how i get on. To add interest to the job, i don't even know if the aerial works anyway!

radio guy tells me "The fused lead is live as is the purple and red/ white wire, the
Purple is the permanent live I believe and the other two are switched
live and illumination." Looks like i can have another go at it tomorrow so i'll cross my fingers ............it's not as if i havn't got the time!

Just to add (taken from a Jaguarforums.com) these are the letters for colours on the diagram.

Wiring colour Codes
N Brown
B Black
W White
K Pink
G Green
R Red
Y Yellow
O Orange
S Slate (or Gray)
L Light
U Blue
P Purple
When a wire has two or more colour code letters, the first letter indicates the main colour and the subsequent letter(s) indicate the tracer colour(s).

Looking at the diagram you should have from the car
Red (R) permanent live through an in-line fuse
Red/white (RW) Switched live through a fuse box
Yellow (Y) Switched live through the radio relay
White or white/pink (W WK) to the antenna relay.

Thanks Pete. Unfortunately, from the notes i took when in the car, i seem to have three different sets of wires; one from the car, one from the radio and one on the diagram and info. you've sent me..........but they are all slightly different......typical! I'm about to head outside now and have a rummage again. Update to follow. (probably with my hair standing on end!)
