Driver's Side Window Does Not Work

Postby omar » Sat Apr 19, 2008 4:35 am

My LHD car is a 1989 V12 convertible. The driver's window does not go up and down. I have removed the switch and given it a thorough clean - still no joy. I substitiuted it with the passenger side switch - still no joy. I cannot locate the fuse for the window motors - are these in-line?
Thanks
Omar

Driver's Side Window Does Not Work

omar,

From memory, I don't think the windows on your car have separate fuse circuits. I think that they have an ignition-controlled relay and possibly a thermal circuit breaker. However, if you've only got one window failing and swapping the switches doesn't work, then the relay and breaker aren't the problem as they control both windows. I would be tempted to look at the electrical connections at the switch and at the motor. Then I would check the motor.

As I've mentioned before, I would recommend every owner buys one of the parts and service manual CDs. At about £13, they are a bargain and pay for themselves on the first problem that you solve!

Good luck

On an '89 you may well have the rubbish square shaped alloy (Bosch?) window motors.
Find a series III saloon at the scrappy, get the motors (black, round) off the rear doors complete with the mechanical arms, as you will need the bronze bush, and fit 'em.
No more window problems, those motors are like terriers!

Pop and Paul,
Thankyou both for your replies. You are both right. It was the rubishy motor that was faulty. We do not have Scrappys like you do in the UK. Our yards are full of Japanese cars and the parts are often priced at 60% of new. I have removed the motor from an XJS that I am breaking and will install that.
Thanks again for your help.
best wishes
Omar
